The direct start in the photo is how I climbed Flakes the first time.

I climbed it recently with someone who first climbed Flakes in the 1970s and he led it using the traversing start shown. Therefore I'm calling it the Old School start.

I climbed this with Ryan Anderson on his birthday this year using a 60m rope and no trad gear. Not one of my brightest climbing moments, but it was quite the rush to get to the second bolt (about 50 feet or so off the ground) and realize that I was about 30 feet above the first bolt, which was about 20 feet or so up; meaning that if I fell, I would still hit the ground. When I topped out and started coming down, Ryan stopped me and said we wouldn't have enough to get me all the way down. So as I continued to descend, he scrambled up to the right to feed me more slack. My feet got back on the ground about where you start the Main Crack and we had 12 inches of rope left. So it can be done with a 60m rope, you just have to be creative. Sometimes life doesn't continue when we get creative, but luckily for us, it was Ryan's birthday, so no one died.
