I wasn't gonna release this until the new CD was finished, but the timing now seems appropriate. If you haven't been made aware, the NPS is forming a climbing management plan for Arches National Park, and are seeking comments from user groups.

That said, this is my response to Deans highly publicized fuck up...

Well.... the link is gone. Today I received a Cease and Desist letter from Mr. Potters attorney. It appears he is worried about his "character". We'll see how it plays out.

I have to admit, I hate rap/hip-hop so I am probably not the 'target audience'.....but the message was amusing.

Wow, that is hilarious and disturbing at the same time. People are really slamming on Dean big time. He made a mistake. Are we going to make him pay for it the rest of his life? Let,s move onward and upward. Dean became a huge figure in the climbing world and gained fame and fortune(hundreds of dollars a year). That kind of power can go to your head and make you do different things than the rest of us mortals. I know about that kind of power. I was my high school badminton champion. I had everything, flaunted it and ended up blowing it. I didn't stay true the birdie and now spend most of my time in the corner dreaming of what could have been. I just hope this doesn't happen to Dean.

Yeah, but did you fuck up access for badminton players at the premier badminton court for people who like good views and very poor playing surfaces?

yeah...a few hundred dollars can make even the most cosmic of travelers, blind with power.

Funny ass lyrics odub...and totally on the money.

Great. It's nice to hear somebody tell it like it is.

You really put it in perspective. Dean is bad because he fucked things up for the rest of us? Jeez.

Dean's climbing driven by his ego? What a revelation! Name a climber who is not egotistical/narcissitic. Everyone who is crying over access issues as a result of Dean's mistake is certainly revealing their own egos.

You're wasting you breath, Bobby. It's obvious that little people feel more empowered when they think they have valid reasons to dress down people with more status than themselves. This senseless bashing makes the entire climbing community look weak, but these certain individuals are too shortsighted to recognize that. That same lack of vision probably has something to do with their increased level of intolerance toward others.

how the heck do you play the song? I've tried 2 different puters and I dunno, I guess I'm a dumbass.

I think being upset with Dean is completely valid.

What has he done to restore access?

please advise

Thanks,

Tom

EDIT:

BTW, does anyone have Dean's E-mail? I wouldn't mind asking him myself what he's doing to help restore access....

Tom,

There is a BIG difference between being upset with people and bashing them in public forums - especially when you don't even personally know them or their intentions.

That's a great idea - much better than bashing him in here.

Tom, I'm not saying that being upset with Dean Potter is invalid. I am saying that being upset with Dean Potter because access is threatened AND calling him egotistical is hypocritical.

I personally feel that Dean Potter made a mistake in climbing Delicate Arch. My view on this has absolutely NOTHING to do with access in Arches N.P., or anywhere else.

This is now history. We cannot go back and make it so that he didn't climb D.A. The best we can do is realize that he is a person, and he made a mistake. I've made a few in my time.

Ditto Bobby,

The discussion that climbers usually have regarding Dean and DA revolve around how it affects climbing access. Others outside the climbing world hear that rhetoric and think climbers don't share the common values of preservation and protection of nature. By not exhibiting those values we alienate non-climbers.

I'd like to put in my two cents here.

First of all, thats a funny song and a good clip. More importantly, did Dean make a mistake? sure! I don't think anyone, even Dean will argue with that. We're all still human the last time I checked and we all still make mistakes, lets try to look beyond the choss and see this in the big picture. Dean's fame/self aggrandizement/efforts have almost certainly done more postivie things for this "sport" than his delicate arch fiasco has been detrimental to it. I'm not defending Dean, he doesn't need or want defending, and his actions here might very well have been indefensible, however . . . .

Andrew, puh-lease I too am concerned about future access in Arches because of this incident, but can you really consider arches "the premier" climbing area in comparison to the other areas in the colorado plateau? Probably more importantly, you feel that way and you feel like you've been mistreated, and that is a fair gripe.
Again, "however . . . " I can't help but view the gang-bang "lets bash on dean and he's sooo bad . . . " mob hysteria presented here as being completely guilty of the same vanity (that is the "I put down and attack others to build myself up and make myself feel better" vanity) of which people are complaining. That is at least as hypocritical as any of Dean's hypocrisies and or transgressions.

I agree with bbrock, ken cagni, and bobby hansen, the display of petty egos here is detrimental to our community's goals of attempting to deal with these new problems in a positive and constructive light, and it makes us all look like dolts to the powers that be. Lets try to focus our considerable powers on improving this presently less than optimal situation.

BTW Tom Kingsbury, Deans e-mail address is a readily traceable matter of public record. If you want to communicate with him directly please e-mail me and I will gladly send it to you, I can only guess he'd love to hear what you have to say.

Cheers all! lets try to deal with this half-empty glass in the most constructive way we can.

Wayne Crill
