Regarding routes on Mt. of the Holy Cross in Colorado, in summer of 1978 (or 1979) Larry Coats and I made the first ascent of the north face of the mountain. I had first seen the north face while on a hiking trip with my wife the same summer and recognized the possibility for a quality alpine route.

The first third of the route consisted of easy climbing on 45 degree neve ice at the base of the face. At the top of the initial ice field we roped up and a 5.8 rock pitch led to a lower angle portion in the center of the face. 4th class rock exposed to rockfall from above led to steep (70-75 degree) water ice in a wide chimney which opened onto the ridge just a little below the summit. If I remember correctly we had four roped pitches and graded the climb AI III(Alpine Ice Grade III), 5.8.
