Look at the pock marks all over the varnish in this photo. I hadn't thought about them before until my buddy said, "I think people were shooting at the wall from down on the road." It totally makes sense that some good ol' boys were shooting at the varnish in the days before climbers, and there is evidence of it all over the Battle of the Bulge Buttress. Around the corner from Swedin Ringle, for example, there is a pattern of five pock marks consistent with the dots on dice; it's near an arete, maybe 50 feet up. Just some interesting (unconfirmed) history to think about.
