Desert legend Earl Wiggins dies

From Rock & Ice Online: "In late December, we received news of the death in Oregon of Earl Wiggins, desert legend, with major first ascents in the Canyonlands of Utah (including, without camming devices,Supercrack), and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Colorado, where he was an originator of the "rope and the rack and the shirt on our back" style, as well as the South Platte, Colorado. Wiggins free-soloed Outer Limits (5.10) in Yosemite at age 16, Whimsical Dreams (5.11) at Turkey Rock, Colorado, and, in 1980, the 14-pitch Scenic Cruise (5.10) in the Black Canyon -- an in hour and a half.

He was the coauthor, with Katy Cassidy, of Canyon Country Climbs.

As well as Cassidy, his climbing partners included his brother Art Wiggins, Steve Hong, Ed Webster, Peter Gallagher, and Jimmie Dunn..."
