Good one Randy.... where do I send the $$$$$?

Nomad, Coyote Corner, et al have it in stock.

Thanks for pointing out the "B" thing... looks like a proofing and word processing error.

It's been declared that we can only work off of a list. Heard it before and confirmed at the Hen House tonight but sadly no copies were in sight. Looking forward to ticking off what I can and maybe hit "locals" status in the process?!

Being a local hopeful, i was eager to get a copy of this highly anticipated guidebook. Here is my take on the new 1000 Classic Joshua Tree Routes, by Randy Vogel.
Randy to no stranger to writing guidebooks, so the book is written by a seasoned guidebook author. I was excited to see a few of the newer "classics" in this edition, which is nice for those who have "done everything". The action photos are awesome and make you want to go do the climbs;....i always like that sort of stuff. Was totally psyched to see a few Blitzo's photos in this guide;..a fine tribute to a talented artist and dear friend to the climbing community.
For those of you who don't know, Randy got the information for most of this guidebook first hand by doing the climbs;..this makes for the most accurate, realistic and fair accounts of the climbs, ratings, and quality. And, yeah;...these ARE the classics;...he hit the mark. The maps are great, the discriptions are well written and thought out, and the locations, parking, approaches and descent info is top shelf. His last Classics guide had colored lines for different ratings, which didn't work for me...but he went back to just black/white lines this edition, which is an upgrade in my eyes. Gone are the boulder problems too;...boo hoo...... The price is awesome at mid-$20s.......
Personally, i would have liked more routes and a bigger guidebook, but i guess this is a select so i can't really whine too much about this. A few of the pics are a tiny bit blurry and there is a number mix up when you look at the picture and the topo of Saddle rocks....(oops..). The ads mid-guide seem a bit annoying to me too;..but i image that's the reality of publishing today.
All in all, for the price , size, and info;..this is the new go-to select guide for Joshua Tree. Congrats to Randy (although he would say that he had a lot help from heavies like Todd Swain, Tom Murphy, Chris Miller, Alan Bartlett, and myself;...).....For those who are saying..."oh no..not ANOTHER josh guide....".....buy it;...it's a very affordable, awesome guide written by one of Joshua Tree's most respected , knowledgeble and seasoned climbers and climbing historian.

What's the climb on the front cover?

FrankPS · · Atascadero, CA · Joined Nov 2009 · Points: 276

Two questions about the new guidebook:

1) Does it cover classics and climbs throughout the park (I have the Joshua Tree West guidebook)

2) Does it cover bouldering? (something I wouldn't want)

Thanks!

Hi Frank,

It does cover climbs throughout the Park (though not every area is covered - as this is a select guide to 1003 routes.

No bouldering in this guide. Just routes.

______________

This guide is a replacement for the last "Classics" guide and it is hoped an improvement.

The Big Changes are:
Eliminating Bouldering, and the many Historical stories.
Cleaning up the graphics to make route photos and topos easier to read.
Adding as many routes on covered cliffs as possible (so if the route you want is occupied, there are lots of other choices and no need to carry another guide).
Adding GPS coordinates for all crags.
Adding Broader Range of route difficulties (5.1 to 5.13+)
Lowering price to $25.95.

Thanks to Locker and Todd for the Nice Comments.

I am now focusing on revising the previous draft of Central Joshua Tree to include all newer routes and information. All comments and suggestions more than welcome. A guide is always a community project and without the help of many climbers, it would be an impossible task.
