Description

The Chessapeak Wall, which is the south face of the Pawn, contains ten routes ranging from 5.6 to 5.10-. A number of the routes are traditional or mixed. Additional routes such as Hour of Power and The Phalanx are in the vicinity.

The routes at the Chessapeak Wall were primarily established by Andy Tretiakoff and Charlie King. The Chessapeak Wall faces south and thus sees sun almost all day.

Getting There

Disembark and hike straight up the rocky drainage for approximately 15 minutes. The strenuous hike involves a small amount of scrambling but is over soon enough.

Follow the uphill, left branch when the trail forks near the base of the cliff. Gain a slight bit of elevation and wind through a few shrubs, continuing left past the Queen and sector. A faint trail will break from the cliff, heading left and holding elevation. The entire hike will take approximately 25 minutes.

This is the very nice-looking, right-angling crack which is perhaps the most striking feature on the Chessapeak wall. As described in SQ3, this is a good first trad lead. This route starts in a dihedral about 15 feet below where the crack actually begins. To the right you should see the lone bolt of Two For One; to the left you should see the two bolts of Hip Checker.Climb the dihedral (protects well with nuts if you want but the climbing is easy) to a stance at the base of the crack.
