Lone Peak Cirque Conditions

Looking to head up Lone Peak next weekend via Jacob's Ladder and hoping to climb/boulder. Does anyone know the current snow conditions? Would it be worth taking skis and or crampons? If it's filled in enough it would be nice to get some turns in as well. Looking from American Fork it looks to be still pretty well filled in but just looking for some beta if anyone's been up recently.

Friend hiked up there last Saturday and sent me this picture.

I was up there last Tuesday. Summit and south summit walls are getting a fair bit of sun. Did not take skis. Only 800-1000 vert of snow up there from the alpine side.

Thanks for the beta photos it gives me a pretty good idea of what kind of conditions to expect.

Does anyone know the scoop on the bouldering up in the cirque? Worth taking pads? It seems like there has to be a ton of bouldering potential up there.

PSA: Dogs are no longer allowed in the Corner Canyon watershed area, this includes Jacob's Ladder. The Draper City Council recently amended the City Code to restrict dogs from the Corner Canyon Watershed (on or off leash).

If you want to take yer pup going via Alpine is still open.

That's too bad about the dog restriction thanks for the heads up.

Surprisingly, it's not a boldering mecca up there. There are a handful of obvious problems on a couple of boulders in the meadow below the cirque. Most of the blocks are just a bit small. There may be more options up on the tier to the North where most of the day hikers pass through on their way to the North ridge walk-up. There are some cool high balls on small cliff bands. Come prepared to set up some top ropes before hauling pads.

There has been some activity up Dry creek towards Lake Hardy and points East. These zones may be a bit easier to access. The LPC is and always will be a fur piece.

Alpine is a better route for the doggies, imo. Water most of the way this time of year.

Last time I looked the alpine trail head was all boxed in with "No Trespassing" signs. Is that still the case?

Ty Falk · · Huntington, VT · Joined Nov 2011 · Points: 280

There are no signs that say that at the alpine / water tank trailhead where the lehi gate is.

Chris and Kevin that own The Gear Room were up there and climbing last week. I'm sure if you stop by the shop they'd tell you everything you wanted to know.

Was up there Friday the 10th. The snow is melting fast. Lots of water on the approach from the alpine side. We were walking on snow from around Hyperform. The snow is almost all gone from Collins Highway. Haven't seen a rattler yet!!

Here is a photo of the cirque from near the summit on 6/14/16. Climbing is drying out. The cirque is still snowy but travel conditions are good.

There are 2 fixed lines in there right now. One of which is presumably from skiers rapping from the north summit onto the cirque bowl beneath the gold wall, and the other is fixed from beneath Lichen my Lady to the floor.

Up to ~10ft of snow everywhere up there above 10K. One tiny exposed patch of the cirque floor exposed which floods in the afternoon so camping is either on snow or lower down. Mini-schrunds at the bases of most walls (except ? wall) some deeper than I could see or wanted to get close to. Wet cold spring has the snow pack up there more persistent than I've seen it in years which lends to a more alpine feel than the cirque normally elicits. Most large talus has melted out. Travel and descent to the collins highway was easy with snow on the collins hwy nearest the wall, but easily traveled on once heated or circumnavigated on the slab to the skiers right.

Humongous cairns now adorn the domey-slab acres below the cirque (5 fucking feet tall).

Still lots of snow in there. Temps are great and rock is dry. Bring some extra socks and get after it!

Sean - did you bring crampons?

Sean C · · SLC · Joined Apr 2011 · Points: 225

Nope. The apron was a little slow going but the snow is soft enough to kick steps. Probably not worth the extra weight unless you really like your feet glued down.

Creed Archibald · · Salt Lake City, UT · Joined Apr 2012 · Points: 1,016

Id rather save the weight. Thanks.

6/18 Taken from the top of Hyperform. Pretty darn cold in the shade with a steady wind. Fun times regardless.

Heading up to the cirque on thursday, has anyone been up the past few days and knows if there is still snow up there?
