Would you wear these? (realization pants)

Wiat wait wait wait, there is a harness built into this thing?!? there are so many thing wrong with that! I don't see any kind of a belay loop? Is there any place to tie a safety in so you can clean an anchor? What if I need to second a partner up a climb?

WTF

What about washing them? Is there a certain type of laundry soap? Or do you just where them for a season of climbing and get a new pair next year.

I just checked out a pair of the shorts, they are on sale at Mammoth Gear in Bishop for only $99! I have to say they are pretty sweet, they look like swim trunks, but have gear loops and a comfortable looking harness. They also have a pad, it may be for riding bikes in, but the guy at the store says it's for absorbing bodily fluids when you get really scared. So that makes them a 3 in on product!

So for older climbers like Locker?

david Graham wrote: OK that's cool man I get where you're coming from but do you really clip stuff to your pants like you're quickdraws and cams? I think comparing these to climbing shoes and climbing technology is a little different Because: 1) climbing shoes have improved climbers performances unlocking new and harder climbing grades. 2) climbing technology such as cam have unlocked new routes that, before active gear, were almost impossible to climb safely. these seem like more of a fashion statement than actually useful since my harness already has gear loops and those "gear loops" look like they would just get covered up by my harness.
I can totally see your point that they are a fashion statement more than an improvement. To be honest tho no one ever notices i have them on unless I'm belaying someone new and they safety check me. Personally I don't feel like the "cool" kid because I have them. They are just gear, my gym climbing shorts. Which works for me. My harness has my safety, draws and whatever other nonsense from the previous weekends outdoor adventure. I can grab these out of my bin and run to the gym.

I have climbed outside sport and trad with them. This is where the negative comes in. They do get weighted down, making me look like a gangster climber. And the belay loop is very small. It is easier to just wear your harness.

So I get all the haters, for me tho, I love them for the gym. They should be sold/marketed as gym wear. Because you guys are right, outside they fail.

at first i was like "yea If these were way cheaper and very comfortable id totally wear them" and then i started thinking about how my shirt sometimes rides up over my harness and i cant reach my gear. then i realized if i wanted to wear these and a shirt and still use the gear loops id have to tuck my shirt into a pair of high waisted nylon climbing pants

This is what I've been thinking... terrific in the gym... good for sport climbing... and a bad idea for trad climbing, that is unless you're a chest harness type.

Thanks for giving a 1st hand impression Mike...

I enjoyed reading Dave Graham's confusion... thinking these we're simply shorts with gear loops... that WOULD be next to pointless, LOL!

My bad Mike, I didn't mean to hate on you, just the pants. Agreed^, If I had them for some reason, and they didn't cost such a pretty penny, I'd wear them indoors, Fo Sho.

I am curious how you wash them though! cuase after every single use for me (especially in the gym) they would become stanky-er than my grandfather on national bean day... (It should be a thing)

If they looked more like tuxedo slacks and didn't have a gear loop maybe. I see little need to have tactical strength pants at the crag. However, when I'm infiltrating high end dinner parties and eventually end up lowering head first into the computer core and of course I make my exit by rappelling into a helicopter flying sideways, it sure would be nice not to have to stop and untangle my harness.

Ok, I'm giving you reason right now to make fun of me more than you already do because I have the shorts. I've owned these since Feb this year. Feb 14th to be exact. They were a gift from my wife for valentines. So... I opened that door. But with that being said I've washed them for the first time yesterday. I climb 3-4 days a week indoors and before I realized how bad of a fail they were for trad a few times outside. They didn't even smell, they just started to acquire a few too many blood stains. I put them on the delicate cycle and air dried. I'll go climbing tonight so if you hear on the news that a Broomfield CO resident fell to his death, you'll know the detergent ate away at the belay loops. All seems safe tho. The inside is mesh like bathing suit and the shorts themselves remind me of my Kuhl shorts. I do wish they had a buckle closure system instead of a draw string. I've lost weight and can't make them any tighter. So here's hoping they stay above my hips.

that's pretty much what i was thinking. i just have a swami belt sewn into the elastic band of my tighty whities for now, and it kind of chafes.

+1. I would rather repeatedly slam my undercarriage in a car door than wear that. What on earth are they thinking? Maybe there's a market for multifunction clothing I could start - g-string with built-in parachute?

Wow. I would rather wear a tutu and a butt plug climbing than slam my undercarriage in a car door once.

To each their own I suppose.

D.Buffum wrote:Seems like the problem would be that after climbing in them for a day, they'd get disgustingly sweaty and need to be washed. But then when you want to go out the next day, your harness is in the wash. If you're on a multi-day sport climbing trip, you'd have to change your pants-harness every day, or you'd get really, really gross.
U change clothes on climbing trips?

I would probably pay to see that - but not as your belayer!!

the worst part about these pants is that you'd have to wear them around all day, and thus, wear your harness around all day. i dunno about the rest of you, but i would not enjoy wearing my harness all the time.. i.e. on approaches or between crags, eating food etc.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
