can u spot the safety issue ...

Nice post of the second pic Nevius. Why were we even thinking there was a danger here. Now we know she is redundantly anchor to the chair. We should just delete this post for jumping to conclusions! :)

If her climber falls and pulls her up, she's getting crushed into the wall like a folding chair. Assuming this isn't just for leisure and she actually is planning on belaying from there.

That's in Rock Canyon down in Provo. I climbed Main Crack (right above her knees in the second pic) yesterday.

i am VERY surprised that some MPers dont see the OBVIOUS danger ...

and of course the infamous DMM you will die article ...

all of these sources give 15-18+ kn on a factor 2 fall on a sling if it doesnt break first ...

if you look at the picture the hawtie , if she fell off would be a factor 1.5-2 fall onto the attachment point ... on a nylon sling

now granted the sling likely wont break as its doubled up ... but the biner loaded in the wrong position could go kaput, and who knows about that bolt attachment to the frame of the chair ...

regardless of the integrity of the gear .... shes seeing ALOT of force onto her spine ... now granted with the harness and soft squishy mass its not as much as a steel weight, and she liekly weighs less than 80-100 kg ... but that squishy mass will GET SQUISHED, which means her body will absorb violently much of that 18 kn that would have transfered to a steel weight

the injury threshold for the UIAA is 12 kn, which incidentally is what the single rope drop tests need to come under

now for those who dont think it will be a "safety" issue if she fell off

i cordially invite you to take a factor 1.5-2 fall on video off a bolt with the same nylon sling and single biner setup ... you would probably get seriously hurt of course

but make sure you go pro it and post it up here !!!

;)

I see a cute girl on a sunny day with a big smile. Move along folks, nothing to see here.

Pedantic me says that since she is sitting so far away from the wall, the chair wants to pivot around those legs. This means they are putting a lot of outward pull on the bolts (not designed to do that).

Quick math:

Girl + gear + chair = ~180lbs

Distance from center of mass of girl/chair from wall = ~3ft

Distance from bottom of legs to anchor bolts = ~6ft

3ft*180lbs = outward pull on each bolt*2*6ft

outward pull = ~ 45lbs per bolt. Too much?

If she jumps up and down on the chair, outward pull = 100++lbs per bolt

Rule #1 of posting new and interesting pictures to Mountain Project:
NO FUN ALLOWED.

And, no beverage for the missing beverage holder

Bearbreeder I was trying to heap on some serious sarcasm in my last post. Maybe it wasn't received.

I will agree on the snapping draws. But if we really split hairs, she can only fall to one side. The yellow draw is too short for her to go off to her right. The horrible girth hitch job on the purple side definitely has plenty of slack for her to fall off the chair to the left, but I still doubt there is enough length left over for her to reach a factor 2 fall. and without the chair actually failing this would have to be a slow fall.

If she falls moving her biners to other points, as God only knows how she got out there, then all bets are off.

If you ask me the OBVIOUS danger is hauling a chair with huge spikes up to a ledge to get these photos. If at any point someone lets go of this, those will skewer anyone in its path on the way to the ground.

But no doubt this must be her current Facebook cover. It is a cool photo.

She's not directly attached to the rock. Plain and simple.

no worries

put it this way ... if she was totally strapped in and never unclipped EITHER side until she was on dynamic rope then its less of a worry ...

but theres always a good chance at one point or another the person was clipped to one point only ... as the OP in the reddit post indicated she rapped down to take the shot

she should be anchored ABOVE DIRECTLY to the bolt/biner ... this is basic climbing safety ..

the chair i dont care about personally

its the posting of these "cool" photos and videos on forums where newer climbers dont recognize the inherent risks ... they use dynamic tethers in the workplace and via ferrata when above anchor points for a reason ...

remember that someone died trying to copy a popular rope swing video that was posted here ...

No foil helmet to keep the aliens from controlling her mind. And I agree with the lack of redundant beverages/beverage holders. Jokes aside, wear a helmet unless you're too cool for that and lock your carabiners.

the only real safety issue i see is me getting my ass kicked when my wife sees me staring at a picture of a cute girl, and then trying to explain myself by saying that i am looking for a potentially dangerous situation....

I would have definitely attached my direct to the bolts/one of the lockers attached to them, instead of that loop on the chair. Was this setup like hand forged in a garage or something?

inadequate bracing to prevent buckling of chair legs due to combined bending and axial compression....

The only problem I recognize has been mentioned; no beverage. It is *really* porting to stay hydrated in the mountains. If she was belaying someone, someone was climbing above her, or the scene was in an incredibly active fault zone, more issues could be taken. Psyched to people out having fun in the hills!

when there's a hottie hanging out on the wall??

Seriously, she needs a beverage, and a holder of the beverage
