I have been driving past Catavina for the past 10 years to surf. Does anybody know about climbing there?

Thanks
Steve

OK bouldering and a few bolted routes. Find the Shrine of the Mother and explore from there. There was a article many years ago in one of the magazines. I guess look for it. Best to park, camp, and explore. It's a beautiful place just to walk around. Great petroglyphs across the road and a little north. They really light up nice at sunset. The guy's at the hotel are really helpful and also have a very good menu. Catavina, a place to get a really good lobster but no Pemex station? Mexico!

drove through there last summer. wasn't climbing but saw some things that looked really good. not sure how far down your planning on going. this is pretty vague but about halfway down the peninsula there is a massive boulder field/ boulder mountain right of the baja 1. climbed all through it in tennis shoes. if your feeling adventurous i'm pretty sure you could find some great climbing. if you want more info let me know.

JP, you where at the Catavina boulder field. It's about a third of the way down. Steve there is a sign for the Virgin shrine with a arrow pointing right. Look carefully. Thats the key to finding the developed climbing. There are several good bolted aretes. Rock is similar to J tree.

The title of the thread is baja climbing so, although not near Catavina, i'll throw this out there.

Open that in your GoogleEarth. This is an amazing boulder field with endless potential. It's near a place called Ojos Negros just east of Ensenada. We pass it each year while racing the Baja 1000. Don't know if it's on private land or what.

Don't forget the mind altering drugs. The star gazing might be the best I've ever seen and I've been around the block or two. It is best to camp out of sight of Mex1. It's nicer but most certainly and more importantly much safer. The key to safety in northern Baja is to keep out of sight and out of mind. That said, I always feel much safer by the time I get past El Rosario, which is just a bit north of Catavina.

Right on, thanks everyone. I have been to La Virgen before, not climbing though. South and east of town a large formation can be seen. From the road it looks like trad city with mutipitch possibilities. This is actually what I was wondering if anyone knew anything about.

Quinn, if you go to google earth and type in "Catavina BCS Mexico" it will take you right to town. The boulder fields that people mentioned are north of town. The place I am interested in is SE.

There is a highway outside of La Ventana that takes you over a pass into La Paz traveling northwest instead of directly north on HWY 1. On the Map is is aproximately by Chivato.

On the pass there is a massive granite boulder field with some larger granite domes not too far in the distance.

Update: I drove past again over Christmas and snapped a shot. Turns out this area is about 6 miles ENE of Catavina at 29-48-35N 114-39-22W. Looks promising. Anybody?

I've got a couple short first accents there I bet I can't find again. Great place! As above, cruise in by day to a low spot off the road and nobody will come messin with you!
