Damn David, that's sick! Two and a half months at the Stead is quality. I'm sure you'll see plenty of people pass through while you're there. Most will be on the weekends.
How much hardware are you planning on bringing down with that drill rig of yours?
See you in December.

Nothing better to do, I should be Wintering in Hells Canyon and work on the guide, but... I miss the Stead and all the good people that come with it. I think it might be surprising (to most) how much the road get used mid-week by climbers. Bad ass Jeeps
The 100 grand in that pic made me laugh out load. If it can be done like Red thinks, I would be all in or till than...I'll just keep driven my truck in. Hardware will not be a problem.

I apologize now so I wont have to do it at the Crag.;)

See you there!

David,
I hope to see you when your down here.

I still have your petzel quick draw from ISO canyon three years ago...I've scratched it up a bit :)

There is a group of us that are working with the powers that be regarding that road. (read Fred's earlier post) Just waiting to hear back on red tape stuff.

I'll make it a point to come see you out there or maybe you'd like to sit in on a meeting with me, Manny and the others to discuss various different climbing issues in AZ?

You scratched my draw!;) After three years I'll trade for six pack of good beer!

If and when you guys get past that red tape you have my help!(if I'm around)

I was asked once to stay out of the AZ climbing Politics, it was good advice than and it still works today.

You better come out and see me and bring that Manny with you!!

Don't forget a six pack,

David

Hey Folks,

Just an update on the latest for getting some attention to the road from the underlying landowners and managers.

It looks like the BLM is willing to do its part to allow some work for its land by the bad spot and that the Arizona Game and Fish Department is looking into getting the ok for work on the Az State Trust land.

Our part of the deal is primarily monetary (related to the need for diesel fuel) and there could be some need for shovel work at some point. Several local community members have stepped up and have given some preliminary commitment for the funds necessary and this is just awesome. I'd list names, but I don't have everybody's consent to put that out right yet.

While I don't have a schedule for anything I thought I should let people know that things are still rolling along, albeit slower than most of us would like, especially with the bad condition of the road as some have found.

I know that most of you who have gone out there have a sense of adventure and are dealing with the road the best you can. Your patience is really appreciated. Also, I'm looking into the prospect of getting the last gate reworked/repaired since it's in such bad shape too.

Thanks again for the positive help and comments from everybody.

@ Fred,

I want to thank you personally for taking time out of your own day to do the research and foot work on getting everything figured out. I really appreciate it.

So I should stop working on getting a roll of barbed wire to go and fix the gate?

Brigette,

I was just letting the climbing community know that I'd heard about the gate issue from a couple of people as well as have had to deal with it myself. I was kind of thinking that it might be an opportunity to get it some attention in a kind of officially sanctioned way as long as the land owners/managers are involved on the other issue. So, I've mentioned it to the BLM just in case. It may end up that somebody like yourself does the work, but I thought it might be wise to at least bring it up with them when I had the chance.

I guess my experience with ranchers, etc., has been that these fence owners tend to be kind of territorial and any messing with a fence is kind of touchy subject. Even with something like that gate which is obviously in such bad disrepair, there can be an issue. But this is just my own experience.

Unfortunately, I don't have a good feel for if anything can be done officially or of the timing so I 'm not sure how/what/when/why to recommend anything to you.

Whatever you do, be careful.

The loop that connects to the tension bar on the new gate broke yesterday on our way out. It's twisted back together and looped over the top of the end pole. Best we could do with no tools, wire, etc.

That setup looked fairly new. For that wire to break under normal usage so soon, a heavier wire or tripling the one in place might be necessary. I would be more than willing to contribute to fixing it but I live three hours away. Thanks for all the work (gate, trails, steps, routes, etc).

I live about 27 hours away...but I'm about 3 mins from the gate, I'll gladly take care of that for you.
