PSA - LCC Power Plant Bridge: Pentapitch/GWI Gone

For those who want to climb Pentapitch and other areas on the south side of Little Cottonwood Creek be aware that the bridge by the power plant is gone. Not out but gone as in flooding ripped out and is somewhere down in Sandy City.

I believe the pipe has survived but would highly recommend folks not try to cross it. One slip and you could go for the swim of your life. Also please do not set up a Tyrollean traverse like was done for the Slips for many years. Another death from someone trying to cross is not needed.

I was driving up BCC today and was amazed by the water. It'll be a wonder if any bridges are left after this flooding.

Thanks for the heads up.

They showed the bridge on the news tonight. It looked like they had a crane there pulling it up in order to prevent the power plant from washing away. Hopefully when the water comes down, they are able to replace the bridge to allow access to the other side of the river.

Good to know. Thanks.

Great. Now I'll have to stand in line at Bushwhack, again. Maybe Perhaps's line will be shorter. If not, I may have to go around the side of a large boulder and do something I don't usually do behind large boulders. Geez, I can't even get myself to say it.

I'll just wait in line.

I've been checking the forums to see if this was the hiking/biking bridge mentioned in the news. Hopefully it gets replaced soon. I was in BCC yesterday and the river was insane. You could hear the loudest creepy thumping as boulders were being pushed and rolled down the river from all the water. Thanks again for the update.

There are other ways to get there...

Pfft! What are you suggesting, hiking? In the wasatch? To go climbing?! That's ridiculous.

How do you die on a tyrolean anyway?

There is a bridge upstream a ways. You have to park at a fence gate just before or just after the Campus boulder, then walk downhill. Its the best approach to the Triangle Wall and to the east side of Coalpit butress.

That upper bridge is cordoned off. It looked okay and so I suspect it was a precaution. The water funnels at the bridge crossing, and watching the the incredibly high flow, I didn't feel the need to cross!

The lower bridge was awash with water, with lots of wood backing up, and the trail below is eroded to 10-12" deep. There were a couple of sad bikers looking it over! Plus the worms on the oaks there were nasty!

A hiker tried to cross it without being clipped in and pitches into the water. Look up what happened at the slips in BCC a few years ago.

At this point it doesn't look like there are many good ways to get there. Even the bridge at the wasatch resort is getting splashed and that leaves you on the wrong side of the river.
Approaching from Red Pine via Hogum might be the best option. Or pole vaulting.

I think he's going to park it by your front yard.

Thanks for the info on that upper bridge. I bet its hammering through that thing! The bridge for the neighborhood at the Resort looked fine early this morning. I'm sure there is some kind of trail on that side of the river as its only a few hundred yards up to the Far Side from there.

If you haven't seen it yet, the aqueduct by the BCC water treatment plant has wicked waterslide potential. The water bashes onto either side of the bends in the concrete and then had this enormous pillowing and breaking wave at the bottom.

Any updates on access ti the pentapitch area? Not from the area and planning to go there but noticed there were some access issues earlier in the summer due to flooding. Wondering if the bridge was replaces/fixed or if there is an alternative crossing. Thanks.

The little cottonwood trail opened just last week and there is a bridge about a quarter mile down canyon from Lisa falls and then you hike down canyon till you get to pentapitch trail. It's about a mile down canyon from Lisa falls lot.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
