Comments: this is such a fun climb,,but watch out for a wicked start off the ground if that lower rock is covered in wet lichens, slime and moss...ruins all the fun for above moves.

Comments: That is awesome..!!! We climbed it in very similar shape about 20 some years ago, by stemming up between the two fragile columns on toprope. Figured either side would push over at any second. Was much more 'muddy' with big gnarly 'black diamond' crystals of ice up in the water flow, thus that's what we called the climb of Wildcat in that condition. Should be old pics somewhere on MP from that ... more >>

Comments: yeah, they are just asking to be poked through a calf muscle at any moment. Should remove them on our easy ice routes here.

Comments: Wasn't even my stove; just taking pics of nice set ups around dinner tables one night. Used same technique in backcountry plenty of times for sure.

Comments: asking a bit late,,,but the date of post can't possibly be the date of when ice pic was taken. Even in the best years, there has never been ice allowed to climb as late as April 24th! Dont' remember that season being spectacular in volume to last that long.

Comments: LOVE those late, end of season climbs when there is hardly any ice left attached on top..or when it teeters over to one side and provides a low angle route and a steep overhanging side to choose from. Melt down ice is some of the best each season!

Comments: The sad karma' after this climb was that the next 2 or 3 full ice seasons were blank at SRSP. Little or no ice; ice that came and went so fast that we missed it; and ice that was judged 'not climbable' by park, thus usual canyons were officially closed to any use. Worst, poorest ice conditions ever seen in 2011 and 2012 ever since opening climbs of 1980. Go figure..

Comments: " Tonti' is a canyon. The two ice formations there that are both open yet to climbing are known as the Snake, and the Mongoose. Snake is the often poorly formed, taller one to the left as you walk into canyon. It comes out of an under highway drainage. The 'Mongoose' is bigger, wider and is well supplied with water from a creek above, not just a run off gully of snow melt mixed with highway slush as we get on the Snake.

Comments: Our anchor set up way back in early 80's was onto some pipes embedded in the concrete of old drainage culvert,,,and a few poor screws too set back 20 ft.

Comments: Yes, from first early ascents around 1980 it has been 'The Snake..and the main ice formation across Tonti canyon is the 'Mongoose. Names relate to late 60's era famous drag racing drivers of the era who were always in each others face.,just like these climbs facing each other. There is ONLY one true Fang', and that remains in Vail, Colorado.

Comments: No, I don't 'think you climbed it unless you hit it in '85,the only year it appeared.,,that 'lower close to the river' could mean Hennipen canyon which has a massive waterfall down by river, or maybe you mean the 'ice dagger', a formation down French Canyon, closer to river than the main canyon low angle ice. All of these are now closed to use. This pic is ... more >>

Comments: Yes, as are almost all of my 80's pics of canyons posted long ago. Check the dates and then check with park if anyone is in question of what ice they can climb legally these days at SRSP

Comments: That looks fun....and if you like to carry a cam or two along, might even be able to toss something in a crack if you like to button up your route with plenty of pro. Can't wait to see the place later this fall or next season.

Comments: Nope. Was it before the day tags when so few were there that they got their own 'annual button,,,or did it show up in 90's when I pretty much missed the Gunks and was out west in Red Rocks most of my free travel time?

Comments: Yup,,,took a series of pics from same spot I'd guess, of climbers stemming up the route, way back in late 70's..think of the lack of gear they had to go on back then! Few if any cams owned by the average climber then,,and only 6 sizes at first.
