Comments: If you guessed that Mountain Project rotated it along a vertical axis, you are correct.

Comments: Fun, burly climbing! Definitely old-school rating.

Rack: felt pretty good having doubles from 0.4-2 Camalots, plus nuts and tricams.

The pitch leading up to the roof is fantastic! Belayed at the left corner of the roof for a hanging belay, but it made for a great pitch and a good belay for the short roof pitch. The pitch after the roof is also tricky and devious, glad I had experience from Lumpy on flared cracks :P

Get on this, it's adventurous and fun!

Comments: Great route! Slab, chimney, roofs, and handcracks - a nice, full mix of climbing.

A few thoughts:

  • Rack: RPs, a single set of nuts, small cams to #0.3, doubles from #0.4 to #4 (C4), and one #5.

  • The #5 was useless on P11, as that crack is #6 the entire time you're in it. I cursed a bit as I was climbing it in the dark, bumping up the tipped-out #5 in the hopes of finding its happy place, but luckily the climbing is only 5.8. We found the #5 use...

Comments: Significantly harder if you don't squeeze P1 but super fun! Horizontal chimneying at its finest. That runout is quite heady as well.

Comments: Thank you! They do, but they led immediately to that rotten dihedral, so we veered left.

Comments: I found the first pitch to be thoughtfully bolted and well worth linking into the crux pitch!

Comments: I thought about it for a while; felt like 5.8 to me. Big swing for the follower if they blow it at the second clip. Glad I didn't get my novice follower on this one!

Comments: Great route! I agree that it will be a four star route with some cleaning. But I liked some of the grunge, it added to the adventure.

I left some bomber hardware on the second and third (from the top) rappel stations. I used Maillon Rapide quick links on all the bolts, and two Omega Pacific Rings on the second station, and a steel ring and two rolled Al rings on the third station.

If the next party dow... more >>

Comments: I used two C4 #6's and a #3 Big Bro. Coulda put some more big gear in, but that protects it quite well. The left option is good!

Comments: Despite the looks of it, there's actually a bunch of solid gear on P2. I found a bomber brown tricam, 0.75, and 0.5 in the bizness of the roof. Now the rock you have to pull on, that's loose for sure.

You can link P1 and P2 for an amazing pitch with a 60m; go for it! Also, the crack start on P1 is great.

Comments: On the last pitch, to add a kicker at the very end:

Instead of traversing off at the very end, continue up the corner into the black band. The corner gets capped by a roof (visible in the picture in the Gillett guidebook, p.56). Traverse under the roof, and turn it on its left corner.

Why do this? Because you'll be turning a fantastic roof that's overhanging 800ft of air!

[Beta spoiler] The gear is ok, where as the rock is licheny and loose in spots (notably, where you turn the r... more >>
