Comments: Went to this spot today for the first time and did a few easy boulder problems. Since this was on the Badger plant grounds, before being taken over by the state, I would be surprised if it has seen a lot of traffic over the years. Cool conglomerate rock with good potential for problems. Some of them steep! Be careful as some of the rock looked loose.

Comments: People have been climbing on this boulder for about 15 years or more. Eric Z showed it to me in about 2000-01 but I'm not sure if he found it or if it was Paul Jones or Eric Bernard. The only problem (or some version of it) I'm aware that hasn't been done before is the V8. I honestly do not know who has the first ascents on the V0 to V3 problems. The smaller boulder of the two (the one with Surprise arete) also has a traverse going... more >>

Comments: Is this is the buttress referred to as West Post in the Swartling guide? The pictures in the guidebook are the same as you posted and it is a 3-4 minute walk from birdfoot buttress. Same elevation too.

Comments: It is true the climbing movement of the problem has not changed but the aesthetics of the classic has. As I look through the classic photos of the problem, its the way I remember the first time I did it some 20 years ago. No pad, flat dirt landing and a small rock just outside the LZ - the way Gill first did it. The chance for people to repeat that piece of history is forever altered. my 2 cents

Comments: Did this face in about 2001-02. Could never manage to add a sit start. very thin and vertical. I like the names. I never named the face or arete. Thanks for posting the problem.

Comments: Hey James, I did this back in about 2001-02. This and the face are good additions to a flat iron area circuit.

Comments: I was up on the east bluff yesterday afternoon and noticed the landing for the flat iron is now asphalt. The rock on the left side of the landing zone is gone. I was only an issue for the left side variations. The CCC trail has been getting some maintenance this fall and this area was part of it. Any way, the Classic has been altered.

Maybe they will fill in some holes in the LZ's for some talus problems!

Comments: It was done about 10 years ago. I've always referred to it as "the bottle". it looks like an upside down bottle to me. Two guys that I met at the reserve one Sunday afternoon and I worked it out and sent it. One of them sent the problem first but I don't know their name. We gave it a V4 that day as well.

Comments: Great video! No surprise Big Bud was #1. Classic! The video shows the start on the left arete. The traditional start is on the right arete smearing the feet high and throwing for the break. I think it adds a be bit more fun to the problem.

By: Terry Kieck When: Oct 17, 2014

Comments: There are several stand alone problems and variations on this short prow and the sides that have been done ranging from V0 to V3. I cleaned and climbed them shortly after the Burma area was discovered. I called the problem you are referring to "The Nose". The rotten stump at the base was still a live tree when I first did the problems so the start was tight squeeze back then. I was out there a week ago and climbed them again but didn't bother to clean the top outs. The crack and face to the ... more >>

Comments: I used to do the cross cube traverse as part of a circuit at BFR so I do know it has been done before. Its surprising how fast moss grows. I would give the FA to the guys of the past. I doubt I was the first. Good long boulder traverse! Thanks for posting the problem.

Comments: Its been a few years since I have been on Super-direct but I recall it is very contrived. Only the face left of the corner is "on". Go straight up to the join ironmongers. The business of the route is probably only the first 20 feet you mentioned until it reaches the regular route.

Comments: Thanks for making an old man feel stronger as I age! It could be harder that V1 but I didn't intentionally sandbag it. I have it so wired now that it is hard for me to judge but it is easier for me that Big Bud. Arete's are fair game and feet are small on the face. Comparing it to other V1's at the north shore it probably is more difficult. Maybe it is a V2.

To me Oil can is a V0. I down climb it when I do the problems nearby.

Comments: I top out on the right of the tree branch. Pretty sure that is where the original problem topped out. Then of course, down climb the tree!

Comments: I know it has been done before. I did it years ago and I doubt I was the first. There are several variations, contrivances, and possible stand alone routes on balanced rock wall (and others in the park for that matter) that are still only word of mouth or where done and no one was told. I enjoy doing something new to me that isn't in a guide book or on the internet and just walk away feeling good about the climb and accomplishment. If I don't tell people about it maybe they can experience the ... more >>

Comments: The 2 problems very near FRB have been done before plus a few other problems right in that cluster. Sorry, but I don't recall names. However, I went to check out Dreamo Bluff and South of fire road area earlier this week and I've never been on them before. First ascents to my knowledge. Some fun problems, Nice job!

Comments: Hey EB! I wish I was back with the same free time of old but that is not the case. I still get out but with very spontaneous trips for maybe a couple of hours. Hard to commit to a consistent night. I just thought I would post some of these problems that I have done for years and aren't on this site. Plus I finally got a smartphone and learned how to post!!

Comments: FA Eric Zschiesche - When I asked how hard it was he said (with a classic southern acsent) " awe hell, call it V4 and ya'll figure it out... Welcome to the lake" I've never been able to do it with the sequence Eric used. Sandbag!

By: Terry Kieck When: Nov 8, 2013

Comments: The Junkyard boulder was found by EB and/or Eric Z on a fine fall day when we still had our Wednesday night bouldering league (around 2000?). We went out there as a group and in that outing and on many trips since that boulder has been pick clean of nearly every variation. Unless a problem is wicked hard its been done already. Don't believe or at least I can't recall giving anything names. Maybe EB would know?

The best problem on this boulder in my opinion is a low traverse left to right che... more >>

Comments: This has been done before. I cleaned and worked it out about the same time I did "head over heals". Grade seems about right. I also did some straight up problems on the face trying to start as low as possible but with the lack of height of this boulder they weren't very inspiring.

Comments: I may have taken that photo. I was out there a few times with Eric and one day he handed me his camera to take some action shots. It looks like my old pad on the ground. If this is the case Eric owns the rights to the photo.
