Comments: 2 new areas have been bolted to the left of the main wall, just a short walk down the path.

No info yet on names/grades.
I climbed all the climbs in the far left sector and I would estimate them all in the 5.4 to 5.7 range...

Comments: Remember to bring a bucket for blueberries in the summer (July/August)!
Especially for the Fichtelgebirge crags. There are tons of blueberries.

Comments: Next time eh!
At least you have the fall dialed in ;-)
I really like how you are actually grinning on some of the photos while you are falling.

Comments: Hey Chitro,

The Frankenjura is a little far for a day trip for me (I live just north of Cologne), but for a weekend we could work something out.

I plan on a weekend trip to the Pfalz soon as well if you are interested.
The Schwarze Säulen area has some good climbing as well.

Hit me up at if you are interested or for more beta on the area. also has a map of "some" local crags, mostly more north.

Comments: This is a really nice place to climb with children and new climbers. There are several unintimidating, well bolted, easier routes that are nice for a new leader to get comfortable on.

The approach is very short (2 minutes with a 4 year old) and the base is flat. There is a picnic table and a couple benches.

This is not a big area (under 30 routes), but it is a nice place to spend the day.

Comments: We had a nice trip here in January (2013). Awesome place for some winter climbing.

A tip for lodging: We stayed in a furnished apartment for about 40 euro/night in El Medano with a large room, kitchen, and patio right on the beach. We were within an hour (often less) of some crags.

A tip for rental car: Read the fine print! Most rentals on the island require you to pay for a full tank of gas, there are a couple that do not. This can be an unwelcome surprise when you pick up a car.

Comments: I would add to the gear list a bunch (6-8) of slings from 7mm cord. We used these for threadthroughs and to girth hitch a few pins that would not take a biner.

Steller route!

Comments: Here is the link to the website.

Unfortunatly only in German.

I don't have a lot of experiance with Basalt (having only climbed here and down the road in Kottenheim), however, it is pretty good I think. The rock on the gear routes generally seem solid and the fixed gear is good. The only issue I have it the use of single bolt anchors... maybe that is just me.

There is a guild book, but it is only in German as well (despite the claim on the cover!!). There i... more >>

Comments: I'll agree with saxfiend. Go up to the top of the crack. A lot more fun.

I though it was a little run out after getting away from the crack, but on very easy ground

Comments: P4 is a little runout, but easy climbing. P2 and P3 can be linked if you are very careful about rope drag and don't put any pro in on the 5.3 P3.

This is one of my favorite climbs. Awesome climb to take a new climber on. Not too exposed, great gear, fun moves, beautiful views!
