Comments: the wall opposite the Grotto that you are describing is Ort Wall

Comments: There were two rocks marked with X's yesterday (3/27). The first was definitely loose, but the second seemed pretty good. If both of these are avoided, this is at least 5.9.

Comments: By St. Helena standards, I thought there were plenty of places for good protection on this route. A very small cam (I used an .2 X4) was useful in the middle of the route.

Comments: I also did this as an onsight lead. I found plenty of holds inside the crack, few hand jams and no foot jams were needed. Very fun, but I think no more than 5.8, if that.

Comments: There were shiny new anchors on this on 5/17/14. Only one hard move which is not as hard as the hardest move on Farewell to Arms.

Comments: A micro-cam and very long sling (I brought neither) would be great for the roof. Still super fun though.

Location: California : San Francisco Bay Area : Wine Country : Mount St. Helena : The Bear : Arete (aka 3-Star Arete) (5.10b)

Comments: In Jim Thornburg's Bay Area Rock this is called "3-Star Arete". The guidebook also shows five bolts before the anchors, but MP is correct--there are only four. Fun climb!

Comments: The supertopo shows a bolt and piton at the top of pitch 1. I found neither of those on the route and would guess they were removed.

Comments: For the longest time I thought the Mystery Hole route wasn't listed on MP until I realized it was listed as "5.9"

Comments: On the contrary, don't jump off after you get over the mantle. Go all the way through the birth canal for the full experience.
