Comments: Holy crap ! -- without the bolts it is just a solo. You haul the rope behind just for rappel and reach the top or die. Now, I guess all the 4-star "classic" ratings are off, too. Dennis Horning and Chip Lee are also listed as the first ascenders -- do they know about it? Was it their decision as well? With all due respect, does Barber even climb still? He's gotta be in his 70's or close.

Comments: I got the angle by leaning hard backwards on rappel with a 16mm lens. I was practically horizontal, holding the rope with one hand and a camera with another. Thinking about it, if you attached something to your shoes (stilts?), you could get really interesting angles.

Comments: Hey Andy -- thanks! Er, yup, you're right. I had Bob wear my dirty t-shirt. His was blending in with the rock behind, too stealth for the pic.

Comments: Thank you, Evan. My pleasure. In retrospect, I think I'd shoot with normal lens (instead of the ultrawide) and stitch a panorama. The sky should be cloudless for that though.

Comments: I won't even talk about what I had to go through to get that shot! All I'll say it involved crawling to avoid drawning in loose powder snow.

Comments: Just learned the credit for this stunning transformation of Sandstone goes to Jeff Engel, Matt Giambrone, and James Loveridge. They set up and ran the sprinkler system. Hats off!

Comments: Burt, we were simply stunned at how much ice there was. The city has installed an Ourey-like sprinkler system to farm ice. It is incredible. And, apparently, it was even better in January -- one solid wall of ice.

Comments: Burt, the lower section is now fat and a lot of fun. Then it's little verglassy for ~30 ft, then it gets steep and hooky at the end. But the route is in great shape this year. I wouldn't even get on it if it wasn't for Dave Rone.
