Comments: I hit that piton few times with a hammer and it flexed. So I didn't want to risk breaking it and left it alone (clipped it though). The pro in the horizontal was decent but shallow. Small rp placed sideways, backed up with the grey c3. Definitely good to take a hang on. Above that is good pro. If the rp rips, it's straight for the ground.

Comments: Alex -- we could not find it in any of the guidebooks and the cliff was mossy and very dirty. I spotted this from the top of Grand Illusion and liked it because from that location it looked a little like Wild West Homo. But initially I was not sure if it would even go. So no, no OS :)

Comments: Yeah, maybe the chimney is #42 on Swartling's guidebook. Sorry, initially I didn't realize what S&M referred to.

Comments: Doug, is S&M #42 the chimney to the left of that face?

Comments: I tried looking up how "PG 13" vs "R" is defined. I found this: "PG13 – OK protection, falls may be long but will probably not cause serious injury", "R – Runout, some protection placements may be very far apart (possibility of broken bones, even when properly protected)".
Not trying to split hairs here but long fall on Wild West Homo most likely means hitting the ledge, even if gear holds. Regardless of the consensus.

Comments: I agree, Bryan your description sounds awful like Scars and Tripes and the picture looks like the top of Scars and Tripes as well (compare the boulders at the bottom). Travis -- thanks for pointing this out.

Comments: Climbed there yesterday. Dry as a bone. But still a lot of fun. I'd avoid climbing Martini. The Martini glass-shaped flake sounds and feels like it could go.

Comments: Hey Andy -- didn't realize you've moved to Vegas. Yeah, definitely check out this wall. Kinda complicated and annoying approach above the start of Olive Oil but well worth it! Cool climbing on chocolate-colored rock. I wish we got there earlier and climbed the other routes, too. Oh well, next time.

Comments: Guys -- despite its initial appearance, this is a great little cliff with at least five super-fun climbs. If you haven't been there yet, I hope this pic makes you go and check it out. Thanks for your comments!

Comments: Thx, Chris. I was sure it wasn't going to happen before winter moves in. Went up to see if my fingers would go numb. Before I knew it, I was at the shuts and it was over.

Comments: Thanks guys! The gear at my foot is a green C3 (purple C3 fits too, or both). I believe it's probably X cause the handhold where C3 sits would likely break if you fell from the move for the horizontal (that's a deck). When I yanked on the purple C3 (on TR), the rock busted, so I didn't want to experiment further and lose the hold.

I wouldn't even consider this lead if Rich Bechler hadn't told me, before he passed, to get my sorry ass to lead it. He also said this hadn't been led before but you ... more >>

Comments: Oh, I know it is worthless. But worthless can still be fun. After all, climbers are "conquistadors of the useless", so when we don't have a conquista going, exchange of useless opinions is a viable option.

Come to remember, what bothered me about Advanced Birding was the Farris's rating of 5.12b, the same as for the neighboring Perfect Sex. 5.12a probably does not seem so out of place.

Comments: Ha ha! This is fun. I hope this keeps going.

Well, if Cyclops can be 5.12a then, I guess, so can Advanced Birding. But that would bump Kelly's Arete and Perfect Sex to 5.12c neighborhood.

Comments: Holy crap ! -- without the bolts it is just a solo. You haul the rope behind just for rappel and reach the top or die. Now, I guess all the 4-star "classic" ratings are off, too. Dennis Horning and Chip Lee are also listed as the first ascenders -- do they know about it? Was it their decision as well? With all due respect, does Barber even climb still? He's gotta be in his 70's or close.

Comments: I got the angle by leaning hard backwards on rappel with a 16mm lens. I was practically horizontal, holding the rope with one hand and a camera with another. Thinking about it, if you attached something to your shoes (stilts?), you could get really interesting angles.
