Comments: Yeah, I didn't see it either until I was resting in that spot for a good minute or two. That's what always makes it so cool, and kind of creepy, when you realize they've been sitting there with a bead on you. I've seen four now and it's always when I take a break and really look around that I spot them. Makes you realize how many times you have just walked right past them and never realized it.

Comments: Beautiful Canyon. There is sandstone, limestone and granite, if you walk far enough up canyon. I saw chipped and drilled pockets on several of the sandstone boulders in the lower canyon though. Climbers that do this should be reported to the authorities.

Comments: Dave, sorry, I didn't see your question until now. It is in Deerhorn Valley, not very far north of the border. I may be wrong, but I believe it is closed now.

Comments: So sad. The new one has zero character. I miss the days when there was just the Eldo Mart, with Ras Kassas and the liquor store across the street. Now it's just another boring intersection... with a fantastic view no doubt.

Comments: I've climbed on many a loose block in my time, but this one is dang freaky. Luckily you don't have to yard on it too hard, but you do have to use it to balance past it, or we did anyway. Float gently past!

Comments: Thanks, Biscuits. I can't remember exactly where, but either it was taken from the start of Arrowplane or somewhere on the first couple of pitches. Love that place!

Comments: This thing was fun - one of the best ridge routes I've done in the park. Although there are only a couple hundred feet of 5th class climbing, the ridge is long, scenic, has quality rock, a lot of character, a great summit, and a rugged approach.

Comments: Thanks, Catherine! This was taken on the approach to the Porcelain Arete. We were hemming and hawing about whether we really wanted to do the Porcelain or just swim and lounge around all day. We did the Porcelain, but I remember wishing I was swimming and lounging most of the time.

Comments: Dave, good call. I took it while descending off of Navajo, so yes, pretty much the top of Niwot Ridge. As for the legality of the peak, I was going off of what Roach's guidebook says. He says it is off limits and says it has been the focal point of an ongoing battle between the city of Boulder and those that want to climb these peaks. He even talks of one climber getting nearly assaulted by an overzealous patroller, and that guy approached from Wheeler Basin. Of course, that guidebook is pretty ... more >>

Comments: Oh, hey, sorry guys... just saw these comments. I believe it was just over 500 CFS when we did it, which was kind of shallow for the first half day but pretty good for the rest of the trip as the canyon only gets more entrenched. I borrowed this cataraft rig from a buddy for this trip. I've usually used a duckie for most dez trips (except for the big rivers). This was nice though as you can do a Barney Rubble type maneuver when you get stuck. Randall, who was in a duckie, had to get out and pull... more >>

Comments: That is crazy. I had no idea a bear could traverse a line like this. Makes you wonder if they sometimes use our fixed tyrolean lines to avoid getting wet.

Comments: I was trying to figure out who that was in the background. Man, those were the days, Bob soloing NED on one side of the canyon, Charlie bouldering over on the Bastille, probably numerous other honemasters clinging to the canyon walls at that moment. Great stuff! Thanks for sharing all these classic photos.

Comments: I saw Kurt Albert solo this once, so it has seen a second solo ascent. It was the late '80s or early '90s. Wolfgang was there taking photos, but he did not solo it, or at least, not while I was watching. Probably the sickest solo I've ever witnessed, although Kurt made it look casual.
