Comments: Hey Pete!
I have not been on Castleton or climbed desert towers. Why do you not like this anchor?

Comments: The climbing up to the roof on the arete is great! A little loose and protected with some small nuts (definitely a theme on this route). One big move through the roof, and a tough move or two immediately after. Then continue up on funky gallatin canyon cracks to top. I placed a directional and belayed off the bolts to the left. Rapped from bolts with rings. Great route! Sunny in the afternoon

Comments: Southwest Montana Climber's Coalition and Montana Conservation Corps worked on the descent trail for the Arete this past weekend. When you top out the climb, walk east (uphill) until you get to another small cliff on your left (just past the eastern most part of the Skyline Buttress). From here, parties USED to turn right (south) and hug the skyline buttress and descend down an awful sandy scree path. INSTEAD, continue east for just 100 feet more and see a new trail on your right (south) that w... more >>

Comments: Camping note: Free!. The limit is 5 days. There are a few, but not a lot of campsites, so either plan on driving another half hour to Lost Horse (and have directions), or be prepared to camp .5 miles in any direction from the campground. The water pump at this campground is not in service, so bring a filter or bring some bigger re-usable water containers. If you're there for a while you can fill up in Hamilton. Just be nice and ask!

And that boulder is rad. Although I think the description of t... more >>

Comments: This route was SUPER FUN!, but not as straightforward, or as solid as Shoshone S Face.
1st, the corner moves above the 1st fixed anchor. The crack is not harder than 5.9, but it's not straightforward for gear or climbing.
2nd, a broken corner about 60 feet above the described p2 anchor. The broken corner starts with a clean crack, but it quickly peters out into choss.
3rd, a lot of loose rock on the chimney. Think about rockfall when placing that belay.
4th, the descent was intimidating. We are... more >>

Comments: Some lessons learned:

1 Don't cross the creek too early. Best to find a crossing that leads to a direct shot up the talus to where you need to go.

2. Scout out the shortcut/walk off to/from the lunch ledge. It was really hard to find for us and we ended up rappelling.

3. The descriptions we had for the start were vague but there were a lot of options. The whole route is pretty vague, except for the start from the lunch ledge where there is fixed gear. But go with your hunch, it's all good.

Comments: P1 - awesome and technical! Fun moves! #1 helps down low.
P2 - run out to 1st bolt on easy terrain, same with 2nd bolt. Pretty short.
P3 - didn't even see the bolt. #1&2 cams for the 5.6 crack. Be very careful, it's loose.
P4 - fun! Similar to p1 but easier.
P5 - fun! Similar to p1 but easier.
P6 - pretty heady, but maybe it's because I was getting a little tired. Don't be afraid to head up the broken tower 2 bolts before the anchor, it's fun!
P7 - go straight up. My 60m just m... more >>

Comments: Looking for a partner for Gallatin Canyon. This might be appropriate for the forums, but I'm hoping for quick responses. I'm psyched for anything 5.10d and easier trad. Personal message me if you're also looking for a partner!
