Comments: understood A. Ginger. and a conclusion I came to. thanks for your honesty & candor.
I lead it on gear today.......... um well, hung on a few at that........
however; my beta is two-fold:
1. rack = 2 x .75, 2x #1, and 1 x #4/5 BD will get the job done. plus QD bolts as needed. stick clipping bolt #2 seems key.
2. tape seems insufficient, hand-jammies are the bomb.

using the smaller gear allows for dumping your hands into the few good pods as bomber placements. .10D still seems fair to m... more >>

Comments: I'd like to echo all the previous comments. while the crack climbing difficulty is on par with things like Outlander at Lumpy Ridge (.10d), I am completely perplexed as to WHY the bolts are 3-4' right of the crack? Even 'if' you were doing the layback style that is suggested, (and not jamming it as is clearly the obvious choice) reaching that far away is rather ridiculous. what the heck was the author thinking? inquiring minds want to know. sure I got pummeled and ran out of g... more >>

Comments: great fun day. agreed 1hr hike from car to climb. single rack from .3 - #1 BD seemed sufficient. worthy to note: there were no tree slings stations at all on any pitch. so bring your cordelette/PSD. it would seem appropriate for this route to receive a couple bolted stations and stay within the style. also: crossing the gully at the top of P2 can be tricky due to loose rock, dirt, fractured features.

Comments: I don't remember the guys name that took the pic. He somehow knew it was me climbing and sent it along just a couple days later. We did the route about ten days after you guys put it up.

Extra credit attempt....
After Tom had arrived to the anchor, I had had time to examine the next ribbon to to the left and formulate a plan. I traversed to it and started to lead up it. My plan was to do a full horizontal traverse under that roof. I was just putting in my first screw when Mo... more >>

"the" place to stay to climb in the Southfork is the Double Diamond X Ranch. its located 40miles from Cody and only 2-3 miles from the ice. it is the only facility out there in the Valley, and not only reduces the commute but reduces your chances of nailing one of thousands of deer, skidding off the road, falling asleep at the wheel after a long day, driving to or from town in the dark, and maybe g... more >>

Comments: Ropes weren't rated that way, and you are correct on the rope drag, but also keep in mind the elongation of one of those ropes is about 10%; making a fall a bit longer. But on the other hand, WHO would fall on critical mixed terrain like this? :)

Comments: 15 years after its inception, the tradition continues.
The Colo. Mtn School is sponsoring the Rocky Mountain Rondezvous again. For details:

Sundance was the first trail we set our sights on, but 15 years of erosion have taken their toll. Please consider joining the efforts.

Comments: the raps can be done with one 60m rope, but its close. and the last rap to the ground will leave you about 5' off the floor with an easy scramble down a couple moves.

Comments: old school quality, style, and grade. pretty descent route tho. be experienced at flairing cracks and have some OW skills. only used a few medium nuts but found a double rack of BD .5 thru 3 about right. dont forget your slings cuz QD's only might hose you.
Rapping the Standard Route can be done with 1 x 60m rope.

Comments: Your comment and both captions are all correct. This was the only photo I had of east face, it just happened to be my Central Buttress route layout image. The MP caption probably should also say: "left edge of image" or something, but the "step, notch or bench" is obvious in the shot. Maybe I'll just try to find the image w/o the mark ups.

Comments: do you know if the next line right has a name? (blue ice start)
I climbed it in 1998 and v-treaded off the ledge as no other ice was available above that.
