Comments: Andrew these Fat/Skinny towers look fun! Adventurous to get to... good 4wheeling and camping. Classic Swell!

Comments: That is what we called the Sandcastle. Not very original but it is pretty castle like. We put up two routes on the Sandcastle, one on the west/sw side that you can see in this picture, and another one on the north side. Also, at the left edge of the photo is a little bit of "The Outpost". The Outpost is pretty easy and put up one or two routes on that.

Comments: Got it Andrew. Yeah coming from CO we would always come in from the east via Fixit Pass, then exit to the west. Going down Fixit is okay, and we would still have to do some road building sometimes, but we would always exit to the west. Going up the west side of Fixit Pass would be burly and potentially damaging for most stock vehicles. (Up near the top of Fixit is another cool little tower that Mike Bryan and I did. We called it The Saddlehorn as it's at the head of Saddlehor... more >>

Comments: Hold on Andrew, partners are now telling me we didn't do Joe. In fact Keen and Jonathan don't remember climbing anything out there with me. (Jonathan was in on Golden Gate Tower however.) Memories... part of it is coming back to me, it was the Devils Monument, not Joe. Sorry for the confusion, but you now have another virgin tower to bag. :-)

Comments: Congrats guys! I too love that wild & woolly Coal Wash area... I only wish I was living/working closer, in my older age I just can't seem to stomach the LONG weekend drive from Boulder into the inner depths of The Swell. And so, there goes another one I had on my tick list. Now, please refocus your impressive efforts on more worthy endeavours, like Indian Creek or Potash. ;-)

Comments: In the late 90's, along with Keen Butterworth and Jonathan Auerbach, we went in and checked these towers out and climbed Joe. But we knew this one was going to take a lot more work and had yet to make it back. Nice work getting this one guys!

Comments: Hi Andrew, I just saw your post. The route we did on the South Golden Gate, that we called "Golden Shower", is in the dihedral on the east side of the tower. 5.9 C2 - "Standard desert rack".

Comments: Paul this is actually the Golden Gate Towers. There is a north and south tower but they blend together when viewed from this angle. Did the FA of the south with Jonathan Auerbach and Randall Weekley. From what I know right now the north tower is still has not been climbed.

Comments: I just flew over this thing on the way back to Denver from San Fran, it had been awhile since I had seen it from the air... but boy, what a landform it is. Even from 32,000 feet!

So it had been awhile since I had been to this page, then I saw your very recent comment jacobi, "Top Adventure" - Yes, yes it is!

Crusher, I love your descriptions. "Above this was a talus arête, where at one point I was swimming, boulders cascading away out of the soft matrix as I paddled my arms and legs, in... more >>

And it never occurred to me until you pointed this out... it was on this exact trip that my buds here were giving me grief about giving a hard catch. Now I see how they make them so soft.
