Comments: Sections of the lower park maintenance road suffered significant damage during recent wildfire activity. The lower park maintenance road is currently closed (10/27/17) pending repairs. The previously used single-track approach trail through lower Kimball Canyon was also severely damaged by the wildfire and will undergo redirect/restoration efforts in winter 2017-18. Please tread lightly through all fire damaged areas and respect all closures currently enforced until access is improved. The roc... more >>

Comments: There are (at least) two ways to finish this route. The photo depicts the crack finish (which is the line of least resistance) 5.10a. The bolts protect the vast face out right of the crack. If you use crack to top out the bolts don't help much... They are awkward and hard to reach. They were not placed with the intention of protecting the crack. Bring a few medium to larger pieces to protect the crack if you chose this finish.

Leaving the crack and venturing out right to the face climbing ... more >>

Comments: There is a four bolt variation to Coroner where the rope (shown in photo) hangs next to the cliff face. This variation is about 20 feet right of the of Coroner start. Several top rope variations are possible on the face around where the rope is hanging. This variation is called "ETI" (Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) 5.10b PG and shares the finish of "Coroner".

Comments: I loved the clean rock on this route, a 5 min walk from Bluff House

Comments: This often overlooked line was Bolted April 2012. 6 bolts to chain anchor. Finishes right of "The Ladder" and left of "Bubble Boy". This climb has its own anchor just below the tree at the top of the dihedral. I too was surprised that this line was never bolted and after waiting several years I recently revisited this project. Classic pocket pulling on this moderate lead !

Comments: This is the consensus favorite route here and well worth the 15 min. hike from the summit of bubble rock. . .

Comments: 3/5/10 Thanks to the efforts of ASCA and mssrs. Dodrill, Summit, Stanton, Hood, and Maguire for replacing anchors, damaged hardware and restoring the route. Great job !!!

Location: California > San Francisco Bay Area > Wine Country > Mount St. Helena > The Far Side > Mystery Hole (5.10a)

Comments: The correct name for this climb is "Mystery Hole" according to a reliable source and the name "5.9" on this site does not do it justice. Rock quality varies greatly at all the sectors of Mt. St. Helena, Table Rock, The Palisades, etc. While the climbing is great fun and featured at the chossier areas IMO, the actual quality of rock does not get any better than in this area, or on this short but sweet route...

Comments: Wayne's World, named in memory of a family friend who passed away tragically in 1998 while I was installing the route.(I'm quite fond of the film as well !) Anyways, as the route author interested in getting consensus on the grade I think 5.11 b/c is closer 10 years after it went up. I'm in total agreement the 5.10 b/c is inaccurate today after holds you mentioned (red streaks) are gone. . . making the climb harder. Somebody installed the bail link to lower off the 7th bolt a few years ago. In o... more >>

Comments: As I participated in the installation of this route years ago it was interesting to read these (now ancient) comments. I have probably lead this climb to the anchors 8-10 times over the past 10 years but never redpointed. My last attempts after a LONG lay off showed that the few attempts which have been made here, along with water seepage/ erosion, have ultimately made the climb (especially after 3rd bolt crux) thinner and harder. I would say it's slightly harder than the listed grade, more lik... more >>
