Comments: Odd. Usually the right downriver pillar is the phatter one and the left upriver pillar is the skinny one.

Comments: Led this last season with a couple of tri-cams placed right off the deck but then again last season was PHAT!.. It was super wet but got many solid long screws all the way up... it was in Grade 5 ice condition.

Comments: Totally agree on your comment hear Doug. It felt solid 5.8 on the lead not touching any feet or hands over to the right! This is a really fun little lead and the gear is good and obvious. To bad it's so short....If you try to lead the block on the top straight on.... you are in for a big surprise as Pete says.

Comments: There is gear on this route but you need to know exactly where to place it. HP if first and you will see. Awesome jug haul through the overhang and then a great steep little challenging face and arête above!

Comments: This is a burly 5.7 with a healthy run-out at 2/3 height on the lead. Stellar climb and a must do on-sight lead.

Comments: "New Moon" is one of the most enjoyable little face routes you can get on... on the whole West Bluff. The holds are super cool crimps and edges and they give away to great climbing movement. The moves over the cap stone are a nice burly surprise.

Comments: In Jay's new guide "New Moon" is marked just a bit off to the right. I gave this more direct line a try and its pretty hard. Just throwing it out there as a possible very hard new little face problem for someone to discover and work. Fun fun and short but very worthy.

Comments: There is now a big ole pine tree branch hanging directly in the way of the upper part of this great climb. One of the big pine trees toppled over above this buttress and now one of its big branches hangs onto this face. Just say'n.
This is one of the better climbs on the West Bluff if you ask me. The rock on this buttress is even more stellar quartzite then all the other stellar quartzite. This a super fun climb.... the holds are perfect and the movement is awesome!

Comments: No real hand jams in the low to middle section of Rainbow Crack More like
off-with rattle fingers I would say. I found gear in all the little horizontals. I call this route 5.9.. especially on the onsight lead.

Comments: Nice work Gokul and Doug. You had to be moving ultra fast. Did you do rappels in between all these routes that were in the assorted areas?

Comments: I actually think Condolences is the better lead as it has better gear off the deck. I know the grade is 12 letters harder but to me the 5.7 doesn't climb much more difficult then the 5.4.

Location: Wisconsin : Devil's Lake : East Bluff 04 - East Rampar... : Brinton's Buttress : Chiaroscuro (5.9+)
By: Burt Lindquist When: Jul 27, 2016

Comments: The crux section of Chiaroscuro isn't actually run-out at all. It's just plain unprotected. There is nothing to stop the climber from crashing into the ledge below. Gear at the ledge would only keep you from falling all the way to the ground. Very impressive on-sight lead climb indeed although I find it kind of funny that you did it after wandering off route from Brinton's. They are 2 completely different outings.. hee hee.
