Comments: That looks like the nail from a Star Dryvin bolt.

Rock Climbing Photo: Star Dryvins.
Star Dryvins.

The two bolts on the left were improperly installed with the sleeve underneath the hanger and only the nail holding the hanger onto the bolt. This is a very weak configuration and is not recommended. The bolts in the middle are properly installed Star Dryvins with the sleeves on the outside of the hangers. BTW, the middle, top bolt is a 1940s to 1950s Star Dryvin without the lead band around the sleeves.

Comments: Just to let all climbers know that for the first time in over 100 years a baby condor has been born at the Pinnacles! The nest is on the south end of Machete Ridge which means that all climbs in that area from just past Corona/Destiny and wrapping around to include Derringer, Old Original, and Hideout are closed during the year 2016.

Check the Friends of Pinnacles website pinnacles.org or the NPS website nps.gov/pinn/index.htm for more information.

Comments: A few weeks ago, Dale Haas and I added a 3-step, green, rope etrier to both sides of the Tyrolean to help getting on and off the lines.

Comments: Dale Haas and I replaced the smash links and chain at the rappel anchor of pitch two with SS quicklinks and chain. BTW, one way to remove smash links is to use a hammer and chisel to split the link open a bit so it will slide out of the hanger.

We also removed the quicklinks from the left bolt on the pitch three anchor and replaced them with a SS quicklink and chain for better equalization.

Comments: Thought Control and Auspice have had their hardware (bolts and anchors) upgraded, thanks to the Anchor Replacement Initiative. Also, many thanks to the Flatirons Climbing Council, OSMP, and the Access Fund for making the work possible.

Comments: As a bit of history, BITD there used to be a small, black, plastic gorilla in the crack on the first pitch. After you climbed up the handcrack and grabbed the chicken head there was the gorilla staring directly at you with bared teeth!

Comments: John,

actually, 'foonting' was named after the character from the Robert Crumb/Mr. Natural comics, Flakey Foont.

Comments: When this route was put up in the 60's there were no bolts on the climb, but they did have pitons. When I did it in the mid-70's we weren't using pins so it was all natural pro. The problem was that there wasn't any natural pro so it was undoubtedly X-rated. Times change.

Comments: Dale Haas and I brought a wrench and tightened the 6th bolt on the 2nd pitch as well as all the other bolts on the 2nd pitch as well. If you go right at the 2nd bolt, it is much easier than going left. That might be why some people think the crux of the route is at the 2nd bolt.

Comments: Dale Haas and I bolted the direct finish to this route. At the third bolt, instead of traversing right into the hand crack go straight up past two bolts to a new two bolt anchor with rings for rappel. The climbing is in the 5.9+/5.10- range.

Comments: Dale Haas and replaced the other cold shut anchor at the belay with a SS Powers 5-piece bolt. The anchor now has one SS bolt, one plated steel bolt, two SS hangers, and SS quicklinks and rings.

Comments: Dale Haas and I added a more user-friendly anchor to this route. No more need for long slings on TR or blowing a biceps tendon pulling your rope after rappelling.

Comments: Dale Haas and I replaced the 1/4" quicklinks and 3/8" links of chain at the first belay with Fixe SS double ring hangers. The hardware was provided by the American Safe Climbing Association(ASCA - www.safeclimbing.org). They appreciate your support.

We also tightened up the third bolt on the first pitch(crux) which was very loose.

As an aside, Dale and I placed those original anchors on the route shortly after the FA in 2002, so they have been up there for 14 year... more >>

Comments: The description for the third pitch reads:

"When doing the 3rd pitch, you should belay at the 2nd belay of the Bihedral Arete."

Shouldn't this actually read:

"When doing the 3rd pitch, you should belay at the top of the first pitch of the Bihedral Arete."

The term "2nd belay" is a bit confusing. Does that mean the belay for the start of the 2nd pitch (in this case probably, yes), bu... more >>

Comments: Looks like red Loctite. I would suggest blue Loctite for future projects. It is much easier to break the bond if you need to do replacement. Red Loctite can sometimes become permanent.
