Comments: I'd agree about stick clipping the first bolt if you're not confident in the grade - the first one's a doozy...

Comments: Fair and valid... I got out of this habit a few years back after (properly!) getting yelled at by many people. I've renamed the rock, and all associated information.

Comments: Does it merit a pg-13 rating since pro is hard, or are the actual placements good? I remember looking at this a while back, but I don't remember...

Comments: Was responding in general terms, and hopefully to dispel the question of whether or not 1/4" bolts are bomber (NO!). I have no idea if the bolts on the top of p2 are 1/4". It might be worth looking into. Anyone else know?

Comments: Rules of thumb:

1/4": bad. 3/8": good. 1/2": excellent. 5/8": sandstone (and still crossing fingers!) or used to hold buildings to their foundations in earthquake retrofits.

1/4" bolts are not a standard anymore, they're usually somewhat rusted out at this point, and look like they're a little bent.

Comments: I think that just barely squeaks under the 1 1/2" of acceptable butt crack.

Comments: This is one of the first routes I did in Yosemite, almost 10 years ago. I had major problems with the crux, and think I was crying by the time I finally got to the top of the climb!

Comments: Saw a guy climb this route with his jaw wired shut. That was impressive, and made the Grotto quite loud with his breathing.

Comments: I lead this route last weekend, and I used 3 cams total, and wished I'd had some more micro-cams. As it was, I used a black diamond .3, .2, .1. Yes. Those are aid cams, yes. After sending the route, I attempted to set a directional up to reduce swingage (and potential groundfall) for my follower (a bd .4), which blew as soon as I weighted it. So - be careful, and bring your microfriends.

Comments: Rented a house in Christmas Valley last winter and got to spend some time wandering around, but not doing much climbing.

There's a boulder on Blitzen, which is the road that is one block west of highway 89 about 1/4 mile south of 50, which (I think) is called The Blitzen Boulder. I was told of 100+ problems, but I only think there are about 15 on a 12' boulder. Maybe the boulder, which is located in between 3 houses between colusa and shakori (and probably on private property), isn't the bl... more >>

Comments: Scrambling along the top is doable - If you're willing to set up some top anchors and rappel down a pitch, after climbing up the other side! This isn't doable.

I'd forgotten about the sheer magnitude of the area; many routes here could easily be multiple pitches, I think it's simply the base area (and subsequent rockfall) that deterred the Hatchett brothers et al from running most routes multi-pitch. Second pitches on most routes would create a blind nasty rain of rock down onto people in the... more >>
