Comments: A couple reminders for the upcoming holiday weekend and summer climbing season.

- Kelly Canyon is sandstone and the rock is very fragile when wet. Monsoons are coming, meaning frequent soaking rains are likely. Please, do not climb here if it has rained in the past 24 hours. There are dozens of other places to climb within an hour's drive. Don't be selfish. Broken holds don't grow back. (You are welcome to PM me or call a local gym about conditions if you're unsure.)

- Please r... more >>

Comments: No need for a new area for one problem. I'm pretty sure you're right that this is a Drysdale creation.

Thanks for adding.

Comments: Hi y'all. When originally posted I just took the V7 grade and skirt start from the e-guide. I agree it is more like V5-6, and I prefer to start at the hueco and avoid the skirt altogether. It doesn't particularly matter as the hardest moves are just before the lip anyway. Have fun.

Comments: jbak, what is the "proper" ending for this problem? Pulling left into the crack is awkward, but straight up is cryptic. What would BM do?

Comments: hey Robin, thanks for that, I was just out here yesterday and remembered how nice this area is. one of the warmer fall/winter spots in the canyon (though it still doesn't really get much sun.) IMO most of the lines are more in the v2-v4 range and have some of the most technical topouts in the canyon.

Comments: Jeremy, I have also been chased down by the camp host for "speeding." That was about three years ago. I doubt they are trying to deter climbers specifically because that parking is also used for the popular Sandy's Canyon hike. I'm not sure why they're so hostile about it.
They're probably just bored. It's probably best to just humor the hosts and take it slow through the campground.

Comments: For the record, most people start at the fingerlocks in the crack. The SDS adds a couple moves but no real difficulty.

Comments: The website is dead, but you can still get the e-guide in CDR format from Vertical Relief. This area is included in A Cheap Way to Fly and I have seen a fold-up topo as well, check with VR or other AZ climbing shops to find them.

Comments: A big block came off the top section of this problem in the past year or so, leaving a bucket where there were once slopers. Difficulty and quality have been reduced.

The sit start is V1+

By: Andrew Ryder When: Aug 24, 2010

Comments: It is possible to top this out, though a brush and/or broom is highly advised. The traditional ending is to drop from the jug left of the tree.

The difficulty of this traverse seems dependent upon whether certain key holds are coated in slimy moss.

Comments: The problem around the corner (sidepull features, high crux and bad landing) is V5-ish and might be the one listed as Block Roof in Toula's guide, I really don't know. There are definitely many variations and eliminates on this boulder.
