Comments: Those bolts are Rawl 5 Piece bolts and they can and sometimes become spinners. You can try with a 7/16ths wrench to tighten them. If you can tighten them down until snug do it just don't crank the crap out of them. Either way I would not worry about them. With luck the CASA A-Team will replace them at some point in the next year or two.

Comments: It isn't a 3-4 mile hike. If you stayed just off the highway where a passenger car can go it is only an hour and 15 minutes to the first cliffs. Add 15 to 25 minutes if you go to Tufa City or Marley Wall with a full pack. I say this with the caveat that you have to be in reasonable cardio shape. If you are there for multiple days bring a dry bag and stash your gear so you don't have to carry it every day then the hike is a breeze and unless you have been to Europe the limestone is fantastic and ... more >>

Comments: Despite the dire reports, people I know with 4X4 experience, have driven up this just last week with a two wheel drive truck with locking differential just last week. Come out and help us and the access fund this weekend. No need to drive the road.

Comments: Or, you could up your game until you can lead it Jon. You want to make it leadable for you by adding bolts. You justify this because there are not many cracks in Tucson. If we dumb down every route that many of us are not ready to lead what will the people who want to test themselves have. Please don't give me the "they can just skip the bolts" argument. You were able to TR it. Others can do the same. I don't think anyone would mind if you added lower off anchors. Just be sure and get them in th... more >>

Comments: This route has what a friend refers to as an entrance, fee which is in the form of slightly dubious rock at the crux. Fortunately, it is well bolted but you need to be careful with the big hold at the crux. It definitely flexes and it might hurt your belayer if it hits him.

Comments: Got on this route at Fall 2015 beanfest. It is sort of a bummer the holds at the crux are so small and decomposing but I fell off because I misread the moves. Perhaps this is why I don't spend a ton of time in the Stronghold. The climbing up the first pitch is fun. The thrutching over the first bulge of the second pitch wasn't much fun nor was the crux. The rest of the route was cool and probably makes it worth doing.

Comments: I did the FA of this route with Chris Henze, Cyrena Goodrich and Bob Kerry in '89. We probably did it right after Chris had done Nightstalker or the next day. The route was a single 100' pitch that went up to a big ledge. It had one maybe two bolts on it. I think that guides who needed a TR area added the anchors. I remember putting the smallest TCU at the time, into a horizontal at which point an upset bat started chirping at me. I could not believe he could get into a crevice that narrow. It c... more >>

Comments: This is a much better climb than I remember and well worth doing. I did the FA in a snow storm which may have colored my view of it. It may not be 12+ but it is closer to 12+ than 12-. It could also be that I am in much better shape than when I did the FA. Either way it is worth getting on.

Comments: Interesting perspective Luke. Last time on RM I thought that it seemed much more sustained than I remembered. Yet, if I compare it to Tsunami it is easier but it is 80 feet longer. 12b could work for me which is still in the 12- range of the + plus - minus system as is 5.12. Funny thing about Goliath is that when I did it the route was rated it 13b and I down rated it to 13- in the gudebook after I redpointed it. What's a letter or two among friends.

Comments: Glad to see this is getting some attention. I spent a day cleaning out the cracks while Smedley and Larson were at work. I was filthy dirty but knew I had unearthed a route worth doing. I hope it gets enough traffic to keep it clean.

Comments: These are my notes almost verbatim on this route. Herb and I did this in 1987. I lead pitches 1,2 and 4. Herb lead #3.
1) Start in a left facing corner and follow the crack that splits the overhanging block 10c/d. Belay on ledge.
2) Climb up 10 ft. to bulge then head left around corner and up crack 10d to the quartz dike. Belay in the right crack.c
3) Head up to the wide crack which can be avoided by climbing around it at 10c. It becomes a fist then a fantastic hand crack. Follow this unti... more >>

Comments: Cool move at the crux. Second bolt should be a foot lower or stick clip a draw to it. I had to do a crazy extra move to clip it as I am 5'6". If Tif can't touch the hanger it is too high! Drill them at your elbow Luke. Upper part is fun but if your tips are tender it is less fun. I have a few more things if you are interested in some constructive criticism Luke. Having said all that it is worth doing because the crux and the upper arete are cool.

Comments: A tad reachy if you are 5'6" but fun. you can wander a bit right or go straight up to one of the bolts. I wandered right then back as JMo did. He later TR'd it straight up to the bolt and said it was really good too.
