Comments: Totally agree Kemper. Half the people out there only have half a clue about anything, from how and where to take a dump to not using anchors when they top-rope. It would be great to create posters for gyms and videos for climbing sites and social media that taught people this. Thanks for posting up.

Comments: Hey Kemper, Just a little info I got from Geir a while back. He had an older SMC oval carabiner that was worn half way through. He pull tested it and it elongated but still held 4000 lbs. One Carabiner pull test means nothing I just found it interesting. It also made me less concerned about what seems like a lot of wear. It would be interesting to set up a machine that would do lower offs and see how many would create the grooves you have on those biners. Education, Education, Education. It is t... more >>

Comments: In the 80's Herb Laeger showed me a close up of Power Dome and asked me if I wanted to do a new route up it. That weekend we went there and put up Go Run out and Pray. We were hand drilling 1/4 inch bolts. Feel free to upgrade them. This was the first of dozens of routes we did all over the Sierra, Shuteye Ridge, Tuolumne, Kings Canyon, Chimney Rock and others scattered about. Herb of course did hundreds and is another unsung first ascentionist who should not be left out of a... more >>

Comments: Interesting idea John. Not sure if it holds up though. Air is used to cool things much more often than dust. I rarely spin bits in holes. The only time I have ended up with overheated bits was in super hard rock. No real data on this so you could be correct but I have never seen it happen except in hard rock.

Comments: In that low elevation banded Gneiss 2 3/4 X 3/8th is plenty of bolt, IF it is place into a solid piece of stone. If it is placed into fractured or detatched flakes they as we can see, can fail. This rock is so hard that a bit only lasted about 3 routes at the Weathertop before it overheated and the connection of the carbide tip to the shaft would fail. Not as much of a problem with the newer faster drills but with an older slower drill they failed quick. You can tell you are overheating a bit be... more >>

Comments: Old school rock climbs often had the hardest moves low to the ground. Ideally the climber has enough experience to make a judgement about whether they can do it or not. The choice to try an unprotected sequence is based on how many climbs were climbed at that grade without falling and if your confidence in your ability justifies the risk of injury or death. CLIMBING IS NOT A GAME!

This climb and Resume Builder are not good for beginners or people climbing at their limits. No judgement made reg... more >>

Comments: The lower section of this route has a bit of funky rock and it may not be a good idea to pull on everything like a hold in the gym.

Comments: Lots of routes you wouldn't want to fall on including getting on to the ledge where the first moves begin. The run out sections are a number grade or more easier than the hardest moves on the route. This climb makes it possible to reach the stunning second pitch of Nuts and bolts with only quick draws.

Comments: Climbed Castle as an alternate start as there was a lot of water at the crux of this climb. Castle was wet as well but I had a big fat bolt protecting me as I did the crux. This is a really great two pitch route if you can place pro. If not, wet or dry do Castle. The second pitch will make you forget the first sport pitch isn't nearly good as the second.

Comments: Hey Jbak, We took a bunch of epoxy up there and coated the skinny chain to reinforce it. I am guessing it is now stronger and safe enough for you. Since your old buddy isn't around to mess with you I thought I would! Haha.

Comments: Camp at the first left right after turning on to the road. If you can't hitch a ride in the morning with someone hike in and leave your climbing gear until the next morning so all you need to do is carry in food and water. Takes about an hour according to the dozen or so people I have talked to who did it.

Comments: People need to assess risks of a fall. It isn't a game and it can seriously alter or end you life. Be cautious until you are good enough to make a clear choice with a clue to the risks involved.

Comments: Okay Kids, how about taking some responsibility for your climbing areas. Instead of pointing out climbs with issues how about we educate ourselves and fix things when you find them or go back and fix them next weekend or next day. Check out school of rock on this site to figure out if something needs to be fixed. I thank you in advance for getting involved in the stewardship of our areas.

Comments: Not sure what you were on. Boot Hill North End has a number of new routes on it making the current topo out of date. If you can climb the existing routes you will not be troubled with the new ones. They actually allow you to make a full day out of going there. Do you have the new Guidebook SammyG?

Comments: That lone bolt might be the alternate finish I did to Endgame. You should do it as it adds a more direct cool but slightly harder pitch to Endgame. Geir shows it in green in his guidebook as a variation.
