Comments: Read my notes on this climb and here is mostly what I had written in my notebook. This route starts just right of a chimney on the buttress that is the tallest part of the formation. 1)Ten bolts lead to a two bolt belay on a ledge. A tricam or 3/4 TCU and small brass nuts might be helpful between bolts 9 and 10. 2)Climb face above belay to a bolt, move right to large hold and seams where brassies might be helpful even though I didn't use any. Higher up wired nuts can be used in a horizontal.... more >>

Comments: Is everyone rap bolting now? The one true local who was raised in Hill City doesn't care how they go up. Just wondering if there is still a group of route police or if I can put routes up the way I want? Aggressive Tendoncies was put up by me on lead, ground up drilling on lead with a hook for pro now and then. When accused of hanging on that hook The accuser almost got a fist sandwich for lunch. Did the "rules" make it a better route? I don't think so, just more run out. Just ... more >>

Comments: Pin was pulled, with the new gear there is still good protection. Thought we upgraded all the anchors but I guess not. Next trip.

Comments: These days I would have to give this route an R rating as there are some runs that will lead to whippers to the ground or ledges if you fall off. If you can't keep your head together on 10 to 15 foot run outs don't get on this climb. On pitch 3 the climbing is easy but there are some really long runs which is par for the course on old school climbs. If you cannot solo 5.8 don't get on it. That being said it is a fun climb. Didn't feel contrived to me even though bolts on the firs... more >>

Comments: I lead this route after doing something else with Bob. The five feet of "unclimbable" was surmounted by making a no hands stand up and deadpointing to a good hold.

Comments: In the last two weeks(3/28/17-4/9/17 me, Elisa Phillips, Katya Lin and Rachel High have added 5 new single pitch routes to this wall. They are all single pitch sport routes. These routes are all bolted lines that go to existing or new anchors part way up the cliff. If you are using Squeezing the Lemmon III the leftmost route is Loonatic Fringe 10+ and is just left of Rich and Dave Route. the next one moving right towards Windy Point is not yet named and is just right of the first pitch of Mean M... more >>

Comments: Okay Kids, there are photos of the Gumby Wall in SQ III on pages 345 and 349.
These are taken from the highway you drive up. There is a black and white overhead showing you where Gumby wall is on Barnum Rock, it is on page 348. If you cannot find this cliff perhaps you should hire a guide. It boggles my mind at the inability of people to find a cliff they can look at and walk to! I guess some people have so little experience navigating outside this one is a real puzzler! Or they don'@S... more >>

Comments: Just out of curiosity, why wouldn't you instruct your second to clear the base and do everything possible to trundle it. If it creaks it is possibly about to go. Maybe you did this but it wasn't in your post. If you find loose rock and you can trundle it trundle it.

Comments: Totally agree Kemper. Half the people out there only have half a clue about anything, from how and where to take a dump to not using anchors when they top-rope. It would be great to create posters for gyms and videos for climbing sites and social media that taught people this. Thanks for posting up.

Comments: Hey Kemper, Just a little info I got from Geir a while back. He had an older SMC oval carabiner that was worn half way through. He pull tested it and it elongated but still held 4000 lbs. One Carabiner pull test means nothing I just found it interesting. It also made me less concerned about what seems like a lot of wear. It would be interesting to set up a machine that would do lower offs and see how many would create the grooves you have on those biners. Education, Education, Education. It is t... more >>

Comments: In the 80's Herb Laeger showed me a close up of Power Dome and asked me if I wanted to do a new route up it. That weekend we went there and put up Go Run out and Pray. We were hand drilling 1/4 inch bolts. Feel free to upgrade them. This was the first of dozens of routes we did all over the Sierra, Shuteye Ridge, Tuolumne, Kings Canyon, Chimney Rock and others scattered about. Herb of course did hundreds and is another unsung first ascentionist who should not be left out of a... more >>

Comments: Interesting idea John. Not sure if it holds up though. Air is used to cool things much more often than dust. I rarely spin bits in holes. The only time I have ended up with overheated bits was in super hard rock. No real data on this so you could be correct but I have never seen it happen except in hard rock.

Comments: In that low elevation banded Gneiss 2 3/4 X 3/8th is plenty of bolt, IF it is place into a solid piece of stone. If it is placed into fractured or detatched flakes they as we can see, can fail. This rock is so hard that a bit only lasted about 3 routes at the Weathertop before it overheated and the connection of the carbide tip to the shaft would fail. Not as much of a problem with the newer faster drills but with an older slower drill they failed quick. You can tell you are overheating a bit be... more >>
