Description
Miles of Ice is a great route that seems to have fallen into obscurity. Maybe due to the long hike or maybe the river crossing. Either way it is worth the effort. The first pitch is a long WI3 rambling section of ice. Walk upstream a bit to find a short but vertical curtain. This is the crux. Above this pitch it is another short hike to another rolling section of ice which steepens at the top. I suppose you could solo this however I think most will pitch it out and want to rappel it on the way down. A very short hike brings you to a beautiful flow of ice coming in from the left. It is longer than it looks and very good climbing. The angle eases about halfway up. Rappel the route from trees.
Location
Hike up stream from Cabin Creek Trailhead for just over 4 miles until you pass the Spying and Flying drainage. From here continue up the trail for .3 miles, at which point you should be able to look directly across the valley and see the obvious climb Mile of Ice. Follow a barren rib down until it drops off. Then head right into the trees and down until you can cut back under the cliffs. From here hike up stream for a couple minutes and you will be across from the flow. There used to be a Tyrolean years ago but it is long gone. If you are lucky find an ice bridge. If not take your shoes off and wade across. Once at the base of the ice scramble up the rolling ice for a couple minutes to the base of pitch 1.
