Description Suggest change

Negative Space ascends the north face of the Third Flatiron climbing up the prominent overhanging roof/arete visible from anywhere in Boulder, below the Papillon roof. Start by taking The Third Flatiron descent trail all the way up to where the trail nearly touches the base of the rock. From here, scramble up and left to the highest ledge accessible via low 5th Class (bring a couple hand-sized pieces if you want to protect this 5.0 section), and locate the first bolt on the slab. The first pitch is slabby 5.12a and ends at a tiered ledge system below the steep headwall. Build an extended rope anchor or bring extension cord to allow the belayer to stand on the ledge while belaying P2.

P2 is 5.13a, and relatively short but bouldery. Start off on easier terrain, and then execute a big move to access the rightward-traversing hanging roof/arete. Squeeze your way up the hanging arete feature, culminating in a big deadpoint move to a jug. A final crimpy sequence guards the chains. The extension, "Space Invaders", heads right from here and is a closed project estimated to be in the 5.14d range.

The climbing is excellent but short lived, and the views are great but the approach is long.

Descend by cleaning P2 back to the anchor (a permadraw facilitates cleaning this pitch), and then rapping from the P1 anchor to the ground with a 60m rope.

Location Suggest change

Protection Suggest change
