Description Suggest change

The Abysmal Sea is a variation of Thunder in the Deep which skips Thunder in the Deep's P3. Nevertheless, it is not a bad route. The Abysmal sea follows P1 and most of P2 of Thunder in the Deep. At the deep horizontal slot area on P2, instead of climbing straight up the flake, continue climber's right up the #5 crack to a belay ledge. From this belay ledge, follow a slab next to a large crack, and finish as for The Call of Cthulhu.

P3 (5.7, 20m). From the large belay ledge atop the #5 crack, move your belay 50 feet or so climber's left to a large overlap with a crack in it. Use those big cams to protect the initial and hardest moves on this pitch. Climb up the easier slab above placing gear when you can. Belay at the same large ledge as you would for P1 of The Call of Cthulhu.

P4 (5.6). This is the same pitch as P2 of The Call of Cthulhu. Follow the 5.6 crack system to the summit.

Protection Suggest change

Cams BD #0.3-#6 with singles of #4, 5, and 6 cams. You may need a second #5 cam or take your #5 cam with you from lower in the offwidth for the second #5 offwidth crack above the large horizontal slot chimney on P2.
