Warning Access Issue: Seasonal Raptor Closures ***** RAIN AND WET ROCK ***** The sandstone in Zion is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. Holds rip off and climbs have been and will continue to be permanently damaged due to climbers not respecting this phenomenon. After a heavy storm the rock will remain wet, sometimes for several days. PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB IN ZION during or after rain. A good rule of thumb is that if the ground near your climb is at all damp (and not powdery dry sand), then do not climb. There are many alternatives (limestone, granite, basalt, and plastic) nearby. Description

This route should be distinguished from the well-known official Zion National Park Watchman Trail, as this route leads to the summit of The Watchman. The total elevation gain for this approximately 5.6-mile round trip is around 3300 feet.

Starting from the main road in Springdale, walk past the Hampton/Dulivia to the end of a wealthy neighborhood (do not park in this neighborhood at all) and hike east towards the middle of the formation to reach a weakness in the cliff band above, which involves some Class 3 scrambling. Navigate north through the ascending traverse over nice rock to the notch separating Mount Allgood and Middle Johnson. Descend into the south-drainage canyon. In the drainage, locate a tree-filled chute with a Class 4/5 section (which sometimes has a fixed rope). Ascend the slickrock terrain, encountering Class 3 to 5 gully options to choose based on comfort. Continue along the ridge with Class 2+ scrambling for breathtaking views of Johnson Mountain, the Virgin River, and Springdale below.

Location

Starting from a small parking lot in Springdale, hike east on a social trail towards the middle of the formation to reach a weakness in the cliff band above.
