Description

P1: Starts at the big wide chimney. Cuts right into a chimney in the left facing corner. The chimney narrows and you continue up the corner. Belay on a ledge. Longer pitch maybe 50m?

P2: Continue up above the manzanita ledge into a right facing corner. I think we used wide gear to belay.

P3: 5.9 flakes to a super loose/sandy straight in crack. Then up a loose blocky face to a huge tree. Long pitch. My partner knocked a lot of dirt and rocks down

Don’t know about what’s above, we stopped at top of 3 (partner didn't like the loose stuff). Supposedly thin, micro pro up above. Possibly run out.

Location

Starts west of porcelain wall. Traverse out along the base until you hit the big chimney next to a left facing dihedral.

Protection

Standard rack to #4. Micros. #5 optional

[Hide Comment] Never expected to see this route on MP.

Having stared at the buttress and line from Crest Jewel and trips up the Column, we went for it in 2016. Very worthy odyssey. One part of the odyssey for us was going up w/o much beta, so I'm keeping mum. Definitely recommend it to the right type of climber.

FA'ists as I understand it did it winter in classic ground-up style. Worthy! Sep 8, 2022

Elliot Robinson and I established Cold Rain and Snow in February 1989 on the Sunshine Buttress just right of the Porcelain Wall near Half Dome. 8 pitches, 5.10d. We hiked up Friday night from 10 to midnight or so and bivvied in a snow cave we dug. The climb leads to the rim near the start of Snake Dike. We did it in 1 day, everything onsite, no bolts. We rapped the route and bivvied in the snow cave again, then headed home the next day. Full value, 5 star, very trad with a little bit of OW, jungle and running slush.”
