Per *Items added 12/30 Closet clean out. Apparel, approach shoe's, (BD, prana, scarpa, REI): Blob, Bitty, and Security Risk have been reopened on 4/21/26.
The USFS closed Security Risk for raptor nesting through 7/31/26.
Seasonal restrictions in Boulder Canyon to protect nesting birds of prey
On 3/14/25: Security Risk was reopened.
Boulder, Colo. (2/1/24) – to protect nesting golden eagles, the U.S. Forest Service is implementing annual area closures in Boulder Canyon beginning Feb. 1, 2024. The closures include popular rock climbing spots at Eagle Rock, Blob Rock, Bitty Buttress, & Security Risk.

K. Armstrong, NF Ranger 7/29/20: following a 5 mo. closure to protect nesting eagles, the Roosevelt NF reopened Eagle Rock.
“The BC eagles successfully raised 1 strong & healthy eaglet this year,” wildlife biologist Aurelia DeNasha, USDA FS. “2 chicks hatched initially, only 1 survived to fledge, which isn’t uncommon in birds of prey.”
Visits to the nest did not reveal the exact cause of death of the 2nd chick, but climber cooperation with closures are crucial to the eagles.
“Golden eagle pairs are most susceptible to disturbance when choosing a nest. These closures allow the birds to pick the best site for survival without impact of other factors, such as human presence. Once chosen, nest sites stays closed until the eagles fledge in late July,” said DeNasha.
After the eagles’ site selection was made, unused areas opened in Apr.
The annual nesting closures include popular rock climbing spots at Eagle, Blob, Bitty Buttress, & Security.

This is for the integrity of nest & the safety of the eagles, those conducting surveys, & the public. Visitors help protect wildlife by respecting all closures & leaving immediately if you should accidentally enter one.

The area is monitored & closures are periodically lifted early (due to no active nest, nest site failure, or early fledging). This monitoring program is a partnership with the FS Boulder Ranger District, BCC, & Audubon Society. Check back periodically during times of closure for updates. Description
This start to Security Risk adds a new start option. While this may have been led before, we could find no documentation of that.
Find the start of Security Risk's P1, and go down and right around the corner from that larger corner. A small wall with 3 variation starting pitch options is just there, from left-to-right are Middle Start (5.8), Lemonade (10b), and Right Start (10a).... See the image with labels. Climb the first 8 meters with Middle Start (5.8) or Right Start (10a), then once up on the ledge, continue up a finger crack and up into a downward-flaring slot between them and lock and jam up through this and onward to the anchor up above. For the best continuity at the grade Right Start is the better option.
All three options are good starts to Security Risk or Men Are From Mars, all with reasonably good gear, and all climbing better than they appear. This center option (of Lemonade) was particularly better than it looked and is the best of the 3 options in my opinion.
Location
5-15 meters to the right of the big P1 dihedral of Security Risk, there lies a set of cracks that can serve as alternative starting pitches. This is the center of those options, starting as for 'Right Start' and 'Middle Start' and going up the brief section of gaping maw between those or surprisingly good rock and moves, arriving at the bolted belay at the base of Men Are From Mars after about 70'.
