Description
This is the standard descent route for the northside winter routes on Chair, but I figured I'd add it since it is a fun and cruiser way to reach the summit in winter, especially with long lines on the NE Butt and NF. This route travels in avalanche terrain.
Ascend the large snow basin below the East Face of Chair, aiming for the steep snow gully on the left side of the face. There's a good spot to stash skis to the left of the gully under a cliff. Ascend the northernmost gully about 200ft up to a small saddle, snow in the gully can be 40-45 degrees. The left side of the gully can take some rock pro if necessary. There might be a cornice blocking the exit of the gully, but can usually be bypassed on the left side. Once at the saddle, turn right and continue climbing moderate snow up to the top of the summit ridge. This is where the NE Buttress route meets the ridge. Continue north up to the true summit.
Descend the route. There is a tree anchor a little ways down from the summit ridge where it meets the NE Buttress, one 200' rap will get you back to the saddle above the gully. Another 200' rap off a pin anchor from the saddle will get you all the way down the gully back into the basin below the East face.
