Bartertown

Most years this climb is a huge sheet of ice sitting up on the wall.  But the ice typically ends at the lip of a large roof about 30 feet above the ground.  A mixed start could be possible although several protection bolts would be needed to make it safe.  In the 2021 season however, a pillar of ice formed from the lip and reached the ground leading to an all ice ascent.  During the first ascent the pillar was large enough around to give the illusion of being structurally sound but on lead the FA party found a large 4 inch crack just below the lip across most of the pillar with only air behind the crack.  Once on the sheet of ice above, the climbing is mellow but calf burning WI3.  Belay at one of the smaller natural ledges near the top or possibly a small ice cave on the left.  The 2nd pitch continues up mellow WI3 terrain for another half a rope length with three different options for topping out.  The left option is typically the steepest and offers a good rappel tree not far past the lip.

This line of ice catches everyone’s eye when looking up at the Thunderdome from the lake.  It is the large sheet of ice that sits by itself on the far right side.
