The Beachcomber

5.11, Trad, 80 ft (24 m),  Avg: 3 from 4 votes
FA: Trevor Bowman and Zach Harrison 9/15/20
Arizona > Northern Arizona > Flagstaff Area > Upper Pumphouse… > Ultimates > Ultimates East

Description

Sandwiched between the two taller lines on either side of this nice buttress is a swath carved out of the lichen and moss that provides a worthy shorter line to the same horizontal break as the lower anchors on The Battle of Who Cares.

Typical Ultimates-area horizontals lead through the lower face, with an aggressive slab crux past the lone bolt. A cluster of iron knobs leads into the upper corner crack, which offers good moderate climbing to the anchor.

Location

Start off of a nice platform between The Battle of Who Cares and Face Tat.

Protection

1 bolt

(1X) red C3-#3 Camalot

A few slings

Clip-and-lower anchors

[Hide Comment] With a handful of additional long runners and intentional rope management you can easily traverse from the anchor of Beachcomber into Face Tat, and finish that climb. I honestly think that as a full pitch is close to 4 stars... Add maybe doubles in fingers from .3-.5 and a few quickdraws to the recommended rack for this pitch if you plan to link it. 70M rope mandatory for lowering. Oct 27, 2020

[Hide Comment] I felt that the slab crux was much closer to 5.11. Maybe it suited me, but I had partners of various heights that all dispatched the crux fairly quickly. Either way the route climbs very nicely and I'll have to try the link up next time. May 15, 2021
