The route starts at the Sandfell picnic area. Head Northwest from the picnic area. Pick up the well worn trail. This moves up the mountain towards the Vatnajökull glacier. Once you get on the glacier continue to the Öræfajökull volcano caldera. At the caldera cross the glacier to Hvannadalshnúkur. The crux is the last 600 feet. The slope steepens. The peak starts at about 100 meters and tops out at 2,109.6 metres

From Reykjavík, Iceland get on highway 1, the ring road, and head toward Skaftafell. Go past the Skatafell road and take a left at the Sandfell picnic area. Park in the picnic area parking lot.

Standard Alpine protection is possible.
