New Jersey > a. NorthWest > Delaware Water… > Mt Tammany > m. The Great Arch

Description

This route starts the same as ‘Corkscrew’.

Pitch 1: Climb up about 20 feet along the arete. Head right and follow the left edge of the low angle rock where it meets the steep wall. Traverse far right along the joining edge of low and steep rock. Continue traversing to the corner and then up to a ledge with a cedar tree on it. Belay here.
Pitch 2: Exit left traversing the ledge to a left-facing arete and then straight up to the top. This route has a 5.4 variation called ‘Sunday Plus’ that starts 10 feet right of this route, follows up the face and then rejoins it. Cool variation!

Location

Start as for 'Tree Toad Fracture'.

Protection

Standard gap rack: Small to medium cams, 2 large cams, set of stoppers, few small tri-cams.

[Hide Comment] NE mountain guiding. Are you sure the start is at Corkscrew?.....NJ Guiding book says "start same as tree toad fracture." Please check. May 24, 2020

[Hide Comment] Joe, I think that is a mistake based on the Michael Steele guide. His book also says to start at "Corkscrew", however the topo indicates that it shares a start with Tree Toad Fracture, at least in one picture. In another image it shows the start of this climb approximately 30' to the right of Tree Toad.... so who knows? Jan 29, 2023

[Hide Comment] The NJ Falcon Guide has improper information. Mark Ronca actually wrote the DWG sections for Neli Sloane. Neil, who authored the NJ Falcon Guide, messed up information during writing and publishing as you'll see in many comments on here under his routes. The NJ Falcon Guide has notoriusly gotten people lost. While writing Garden State Climbing, I interviewed Mark Ronca and he stated to me that he wrote the sections for Neil. My information for most of my route descriptions are fro mthe first ascent climbers and myself climbign the route. I interviewed Nicholas Clifford before he passed away about the details of all of his routes in the DWG. Amazing climber! Happy Climbing! Jan 29, 2023

[Hide Comment] Joey, I didn't realize you put out a new guidebook covering the area, that's super exciting! Rob Holzman put out a guidebook including the area and... it's basically unusable; I bought it then immediately returned it. I'll have to snag a copy of yours. I currently working on an updated guide for the PA side.

Just ordered it, I'm pumped to see your work! Jan 29, 2023
[Hide Comment] The whole confusion about starting at corkscrew is that multiple climbs can start at the scramble below tree toads corner. Corkscrew used to start at that ramp and traverse left below small roofs but a lot of bush has grown in there so most start corkscrew to the left above a scramble next to a boulder 15 feet up.
