The Torcher

V8, Boulder, 15 ft (5 m),  Avg: 4 from 11 votes
FA: John Sherman
New Hampshire > WM: Franconia N… > Franconia Notch… > Torcher

Description

The Torcher is a classic testpiece ring-locking, footwork, and core strength. It will shred your skin and possibly break your spirit, but you’ll be grinning ear to ear every time you try it.

Start in the back of the crack with your feet on a pedestal and your hands in some sinker jams. Climb the thinning crack to it's terminus and make hard technical moves to the arete. Somewhat tricky sloper slapping and compression takes you to the top of the boulder. Take note of the crimp hard to see on the left face. The top out is straight forward on good holds, but it not something you would want to pop off of.

Protection

As many pads as you can find. Or in the style of the FA, probably just throw down a towel to keep your shoes dry.

[Hide Comment] This is one of the best boulder problems in NH, and in my opinion, the entire country. Perfect granite, sculpted holds, and sustained hard climbing all the way to the end. Full value without being highball due to the significant amount of horizontal.

[Hide Comment] Nice edit Franky, glad you put in the time on it!
It's definitely one of my favorites, but I think Overlooked has to be the best boulder in the state! May 22, 2020

[Hide Comment] Thanks Eli! I shied away from it at first due to its crack climbing nature, but had a blast learning how to ringlock and handjam. Even if you don't consider yourself a crack climber don't let that deter you from trying this world class boulder! Try learning something new and you will be rewarded with one of the most incredible climbing experiences around. May 25, 2020
