Arachnophobia

5.11-, Sport, 65 ft (20 m),  Avg: 2.7 from 7 votes
FA: unknown
New Hampshire > Dartmouth / Lak… > Newbury Cut > Railroad Cut

Description

Start to the left of the slab that Arachnophobia starts on by pulling an easy mantle on good crimps. At this stance you will be able to look up at the groove you're supposed to climb through and will likely be able to see some spider webs. Depending on how strong you are and your fear of spiders, this crux has a lot to offer. Staying in the crystally groove will keep the route in the 5.11 range and offer an interesting sequence between some relatively large holds and mostly positive holds. Footwork is key, and you will find yourself shuffling both your feet to make use of the very directional holds.

After pulling through the harder section, the route becomes an enjoyable jug-haul/clip up to the anchors.

Location

Located to the right of Soul Train, this is currently the farthest down bolted line on the left side of the Cut. These routes are easily identified, as they start within five feet of each other and climb two separate features to the same block with two anchors on it.

Protection

Definitely lives up to his name. I don't know how many spider webs I ate on my way up. I still am not positive on the difference between this one and Bubbas secret sauce but I definitely think this is closer to the 5.9 rating of Bubbas than 5.11

[Hide Comment] I cleaned this route and found a few hidden holds. After scrubbing, I only TRed it and found myself having to really consider balance and positioning. Really a lot of fun. It will feel harder if you try climbing it like a face climb. Have to lead it to get a real feel of the difficulty. Aug 1, 2017

[Hide Comment] Very fun and pumpy route though I do not know if it is quite a 5.11. While at the Cut I was looking on the app and I could not figure out the difference between this route and Bubas Secret Sauce. I think the amount of spiderwebs encountered on this rout confirmed the route. Sep 6, 2020
[Hide Comment] I'm not good enough to complete this route but it's really fun and a nice challenge once you've mastered Soul Train. It could definitely use some bolt love - one anchor is missing completely and the other spins. Luckily the anchors for Soul Train are just a few feet to the left, but it would be nice to see these ones fixed. Nov 4, 2022
