Access Issue: Seasonal Raptor Closure at Newhalem Crags March 1st to mid-July Details

Peregrine falcons select nest sites on cliffs in the Upper Skagit Valley, including the Climbing Management Areas of Newhalem West (Ryan’s Wall) and Newhalem East. As required in the NPS Superintendent’s Compendium, these areas will be closed to all public from March 1st to July 15th of each year, or until the young falcons have fledged or NPS staff have determined that nesting will not occur on a specific wall during this period. Access Fund, Washington Climbers Coalition and NPS partner on a volunteer raptor monitoring program to determine nesting activity. Contact the NPS and/or WCC for updates.

Description

P1- Start up the chock stones and through a bulge onto the face. Follow the left trending crack, clipping a bolt through a hollow section. The crack then trends back right to a new bolted anchor with rap rings. A good stand alone 5.8/5.9 pitch. 25m, doubles to 2", nuts

p2-Start up a fist crack. Climb past another broken section and up a mossy layback. Continue up a crack system until it turns into an ugly gully. Leave the gully, climbing right to the anchors.

Start up the chockstones, protecting with gear, or if wet clipping the bolt out right and climbing the face. Continue up the hand crack which cuts back to the right before reaching the chains.

Great climbing. It is in need of some scrubbing and a mid anchor would be nice. Can be done in one long mega pitch, for which having triples from .75 - 3 would be nice. 5.8 climbers will want to bring a #4, maybe two. The anchors that are seen from the ground with tat on them are in need of replacement. They are currently backed up with an offset stopper and all of the tat is bad. Do not rappel to these, instead, aim down and climber's right, towards a dead tree. You'll find two shiny bolts with non-lockers on them. Jun 4, 2020

This first pitch of this climb just got a new anchor, a couple bolts, a cleaning and removal of big death blocks..... now a modern *** safe climb the for the 5.8/5.9 leader. Second pitch is still dirty. Jul 13, 2020

Awesome moderate!! Good for a 5.8 leader pushing into 5.8+/5.9 ! Solid rock, good movement, as fun as Index, but with no people!! Aug 12, 2020
