The Sumac Route

5.8, Sport, 90 ft (27 m),  Avg: 2 from 71 votes
FA: Wolfe & Maidy
California > Los Angeles Basin > Santa Monica Mo… > Echo Cliffs > Left Flank

Description

Climbs the face on the left side of the crack with the sumac bush growing out of the top. Fun, varied, steep climbing on edges and pockets. The bolting is little bit "sporty" compared to some of the Echo moderates, but the protection is where you need it. Traverses right under the sumac to finish. Shares the anchor with Morning Glory.

Location

This route is located just right of Wet Bush and left of the obvious crack.

Protection

8 bolts and 2 ring fixed anchor.

[Hide Comment] "Sumac" climbs up the steep wall left of the obvious crack. The opening moves ascend suspect rock and holds should be carefully assessed for dependability. The route is steep and committing, but eases up above the 4th bolt.

[Hide Comment] Liking this route more and more as it cleans up. Like Ben said, steep and committing, but not really that difficult. The final bolt directly under the sumac bush is camouflaged and a bit difficult to spot. There's still some loose rock inside the crack to watch out for. The face is pretty clean. Our new favorite warm-up route on the wall. Nov 19, 2013
