May Day

5.10b, Sport, 80 ft (24 m),  Avg: 3.1 from 132 votes
FA: FFA 5/6/05 by Kevin Rauch & Kevin Evansen
Washington > South-W & Tacoma > Columbia Gorge > Ozone > (5) Old Tree Wall

Description

Follow bolts up a dihedral to a ledge. Great movement off the ledge leads to a bulge. This leads to a beautiful but short arete. This is one of my favorite routes at Ozone so far!
There is a TR variation to this route called SOS. Angle up under the roof to the left of the flakes/bolts on the first half. Pull up through the roof on small edges with powerful moves. Probably 5.11b and well worth doing!
(Do not bolt the variation)

Location

Starts in dihedral about 15 feet right of the old tree

Protection

bolts, at least 13 including anchors

[Hide Comment] This is a great climb. Probably only 10b, and less continuous than Sweeping Beauty, but still long and highly enjoyable.

Also, perhaps this should be moved to the Old Tree Area and MD route and Rauch Factor moved into the shield. Since this climb ends at the same anchors as Kamikaze, it should be included in the same section as that route, IMO... Aug 18, 2011

[Hide Comment] I'd say this is the best 5.10 at Ozone. Great climbing down low through the flakes, and fun arĂȘte climbing above the ledge. Sep 30, 2014

[Hide Comment] For me this climb is a slight bit harder than Sweeping Beauty. Aug 10, 2016

[Hide Comment] Shared anchor with Kamikaze, with permadraws. Pretty sure it was only like 10 bolts, not including anchors. Two committing spots throughout, otherwise standard Ozone ledges. Sep 19, 2022
