Research (maybe?)

Description

This may or may not be an 'established' or named route, but it's kinda hard to tell in the Graduate School area, especially from the bottom. Counting down the routes listed on the Park's map, it appears this line might be the one called "Research." If my description isn't a legitimate line, let me know and I'll fix or nix the whole thing.

We started up from the river just right of a rock buttress. The easiest line starts up a slab, skirts the left side of a bulge, ascends a short, chandelier section, and ends on the rim between the 4th and 5th spigots (counting from the north), about 3m south of the 12" dbh Ponderosa near the rim.

We chose this line because it was after 4pm, but the spigots in the Grad School weren't turned on this particular weekday.

Location

We descended into the canyon just upstream from the Schoolroom, dropping under the penstock and turning right (upstream, south) upon reaching the bottom. We followed the river upstream, passing under all the farmed ice sheets of the Grad School until we reached a rock buttress on the right. Peering around the buttress, there was no more farmed ice visible further upstream, so this may be as far south as you can go along the base of the Grad School area.

Protection

Screws. Naivety.

There was no more farmed ice past the rock buttress in the bottom left. We started from here, up the slab in the photo center.

[Hide Comment] We did a few routes there a week ago; they may have added a few more shower heads this year? Struck me that there are now maybe 7? (wish I'd counted them.) If you were at/near the South end, perhaps it was Master's Degree or Organic Chemistry? All are about the same length and difficulty. Research is now near the middle (judging by the map). As you say, hard to tell. Were there any tree branches jutting out about 15 from the top? Feb 19, 2012
