Outlet Falls

WI2-3, Ice, 500 ft (152 m), 5 pitches, Grade II,  Avg: 2 from 1 vote
FA: unknown
New York > Adirondacks > Adirondack Ice… > F: The Central… > Crane Mountain > Southwest Slopes

Description

This climb follows the outlet of Crane Mountain Pond. The bottom pitch is the best of the bunch, and makes an excellent day on its own, however, one can ascend all the way to the pond, encountering a few more interesting sections of ice, separated by snow-slogs, along the way.
The bottom pitch is a large flow that splits in two. The left side is steep solid WI3 to 3+/4- depending on conditions; the right side is good WI2 and leads directly up the longest stretch of ice above.
The higher flow is a narrow WI1 with a couple WI2 lumps along the way. It can be climbed to the point where the outlet trail reaches the open slab, about 1/8 mile below the pond.
Note that there are several options for mixed climbing to the left of the falls, both at the bottom and near a few of the steeper spots higher up.

Location

The outlet trail is the westernmost hiking trail, that comes down from Crane Mtn. Pond. Gain this trail, which begins 1 mile west of the trailhead parking lot, and cut west along a level area below where it begins climbing steeply up the mountain (just past the cave). Contour along, dropping down slightly at first, until the way is pinched by cliffs and boulders on the right and a steep slope on the left. You will have to descend a bit to avoid wallowing amongst boulders to reach the obvious ravine with the flow.
Be aware that currently, the start of this route and the access path described is on private property. Please tread carefully, and do not posthole in ski trails.
Rappel with a single rope is possible if one does only the first pitch; for those climbing the entire flow, use any of the hiking trails to descend.

Protection

Screws, runners.
