Description Suggest change

OVERVIEW: Alpine start ~ 6AMish. Up a saddle, across a ridge, down a gully, or other opitons. The ridge straddles the border of Austria.

Starting from the Jennerbahn just above Hinterbrand, the trail goes up a saddle. In the saddle, follow the trail to the left. Once you see stone, look for the red dot, with a white circle. These are the trail-markers that were applied liberally. You will be shortly at the summit of the Jäger Kreutz (a steel cross), and then the Hohe Brett (high board, 2338m) named so as it is a long flat beam ridge. You will know it as there is a big wooden cross with a summit journal. The route contiunues to traverses this ridge. It will begin to descend where a gully appears. You can exit the gully now, or contiune to the summit of the Hoher Göll (2522m) which may take another 2-3 hours. From there one has several options, if it is still early in the day and you and the weather are still fresh (And you have transp. figured out), one could continue on all the way to Kehlstein, and take the elevator down. Otherwise backtrack to the major trail through the gully (3rd class). Descend the amazing gully, on the German side, where a limestone canvas has been delecately carved by glaciers. There are many caves to explore here if you have canyoning gear, otherwise avoid stepping in them. This gully is l-o-n-g and gets steep with scree at the end. Initially stay right, then cut to the left side of the obvious tower (Pflughörndl). It spits you out right back at Sharitzkehl-alm. A short hike from your Auto.

Location Suggest change

Go east on the 319 to Obersalzberg, at the traffic-circle, turn onto Sharitzkehlstrasse. Park either at the Sharitzkehlalm or up the road at the parking for the Jenner and Jennerbahn. The trailhead starts at the Jennerbahn.

Protection Suggest change

There are several short sections of klettersteig, which can be well maneuvered without a harness and biners, even in fog, in wind maybe not so much. One thing to be aware of in the fog, is the ridge is a knife edge on the Austrian side, so be aware of your footing and course.

I would suggest having a good map,
Gore-tex, vibram boots, 2L h2o, 2lbs food. (there are no huts on this route so bring in what you need.)
